End of the world: Coronavirus panic and African locust plague spark Bible apocalypse fears

THE END OF THE WORLD is upon us, as Coronavirus, an apocalyptic locust plague and the conflict between Iran and the US fulfils the prophecy for Jesus' Second Coming, according to outrageous claims among Biblical scholars.

The deadly disease has now claimed the lives of more than 1,300 people in China and is threatening to become a global pandemic, while conflict in Iran and the African locust invasion have the Middle East on high alert. But, Biblical scholar Melvin Sandelin, has urged viewers on his “Christian Life” YouTube channel not to fear, claiming it is just part of the process for the return of Jesus Christ. Mr Sandellin wildly suggested coronavirus is “just one of the examples” that the End Times prophecy is “being fulfilled” and he is not alone in his thinking.

He said last week: “We know that the end results of the Bible prophecies is that the world is going to come to an end when Jesus comes back.

“As we see these signs increase, we know that we are getting closer to that moment.

“But notice that one of the signs that Jesus gives us for the end of the world is in Matthew 23, verse six and seven.”

The Gospel passage reads: “And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars. 

"See that you are not troubled, these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

“For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 

“And there will be famines, pestilence and earthquakes in various places.”

Mr Sandellin added: “2,000 years ago Jesus made the prediction that in the time before he would come back the world would not be free from disease and outbreaks.

“Despite the modern efforts being made by the medical world, new diseases and outbreaks still take place.

“The Wuhan coronavirus is just one of these examples of how we see End Times prophecy like this being fulfilled in front of our very eyes.

“As the whole world is sucked into this media-furled fear for the coronavirus, Jesus said ‘don’t fear’.

“These things must happen, they are a sign of what is soon to come, Jesus is coming back soon.”

Meanwhile, a locust swarm “as big as a major city” is wreaking havoc in Africa and experts say it could grow 400 times the size by June, spreading to Uganda, South Sudan and further North, threatening the Middle East.

It is almost like a page out of the Bible's Old Testament book of Exodus.

A chapter reads: “So Moses stretched out his staff over Egypt, and the Lord made an east wind blow across the land all that day and all that night. 

“By morning the wind had brought the locusts, they invaded all Egypt and settled down in every area of the country in great numbers. 

“Never before had there been such a plague of locusts, nor will there ever be again. 

“They covered all the ground until it was black. 

“They devoured all that was left after the hail everything growing in the fields and the fruit on the trees. 

“Nothing green remained on tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.”

A pastor in Kenya’s capital said he was asking for God’s forgiveness following the invasion earlier this month.

He said: “It is not normal that the country has been invaded by desert locusts and having rain in the month of January. 

“I am here to repent our sins and ask God for forgiveness because something is wrong somewhere and also ask God for His visitation. 

“God bless you all, call the Lord and he will hear your prayers.”

Last night, a rocket attack slammed into an Iraqi base in the province of Kirkuk, where US bases are stationed.

It was the latest saga following heightened tensions between the US and Iran which have been mounting since Donald Trump ordered the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani on January 3.

California-based prophecy writer Bill Salus told viewers on his YouTube channel “Prophecy Watchers” that “Iran is the elephant in the room in the Middle East, he’s the bully".

Mr Salus suggested that God is angry with the current Iranian leadership and that Christians should watch recent events as they are likely to fulfil biblical prophecies.

He added: “I really do believe this is going to lead to other things.

“This is number one on my radar.”

The popular Christian novelist Joel Rosenberg, who in recent years has led trips of evangelical leaders to meet with leaders in the Middle East, said that while he is cautious about saying that prophecies from the Bible are unfolding right now, he takes those forecasts from the Old and New Testaments seriously.

He interprets biblical texts such as Ezekiel 38, which describes a forthcoming war, as meaning that Iran will ally with Russia and attack Israel. 

He says that Jeremiah 49, which describes the destruction of a nation, promises God’s judgment, as well as his eventual blessing, specifically on the nation of Iran. 

North Korean Christian Risks Life, Walks 'Many Hours' to Be Baptized

A North Korea Christian woman who fled to China illegally was recently baptized, even though such an action could have resulted in her being repatriated back to her nation and killed.

The woman, identified as “Bon-Hwa” by Open Doors, crossed the border more than two years ago into China, where it is illegal to help North Korea escapees. 

Despite the risk, Open Doors ministry partners have set up “safe houses” along the border for North Korean Christians as well as for women who could be forced into a marriage. It was at one of these safe houses that Bon-Hwa became a Christian.

“She wanted to be baptized so badly that she couldn’t wait any longer,” the Open Doors pastor who baptized her said.

She could not be baptized in her new hometown – it would have been too risky – so she and two other Christians, including the pastor, walked to a remote location.

“It took many hours to reach the place,” an Open Doors staffer said.

The pastor opened the ceremony in prayer, and the Christians recited the Apostles’ Creed. Unlike baptisms elsewhere in the world, there was no crowd. Including Bon-Hwa, there were only three in attendance. 

The pastor became emotional. 

“I had to contain myself and focus on the steps of the ceremony,” he told Open Doors. “Or else, I would have cried loudly myself. It was such a beautiful moment and such a privilege to baptize a North Korean believer in these circumstances.”

The pastor asked a series of questions, with Bon-Hwa answering each time:

“Do you believe that Jesus is the Savior of your life?”

“Yes.”

“Do you believe that only through Jesus’ blood, you can enter Heaven after death?”

 “Yes.”

“Do you accept that you are sinful and you can only be saved by Jesus’ name?”

“Yes.”

Bon-Hwa, too, cried, as she was baptized “in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

“It was a holy moment,” the pastor said. 

She has memorized Psalm 119, Romans 8 and other biblical chapters since her conversion.

“She is acutely aware she could be arrested any day,” Open Doors said, “yet she rests in Jesus.”

Sanhedrin Gets Authorization To Use Their Trees For Third Temple     

Five years ago, the Sanhedrin began planning in preparation for the needs of the Third Temple and today is the first day the fruit of their labor can be used.

Most people envision the Temple as a form of open-air barbecue with animals being slaughtered and burned on the altar. Though it is true that animal sacrifices play a central role in the Temple service, the plant world also played a significant role.  

The wine libation came from vines cultivated using a specific method. Grain offerings were necessary elements in the daily Temple Service. Large amounts of the highest quality olive oil were used in the menorah. 

Bikurim (firstfruits), brought from the seven species special to the land of Israel, played a seasonal role in the Temple, as did the four species of trees that are used every Sukkoth.

Even the wood burned on the altar was harvested especially for Temple use and individually checked for worms. Ever-present on the altar were three piles of wood: the first for burning the animal sacrifices, the second for making coals to burn the incense, and the third for the perpetual altar fire commanded by the Bible.

And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the Kohen shall burn wood on it every morning. Leviticus 6:5

The wood used in these arrangements were considered sacrifices. In the Second Temple period, the wood was provided as an annual offering.

And we cast lots, the Kohanim, the Leviim, and the people, for the wood-offering, to bring it into the house of our God. Nehemiah 10:35

Some agricultural needs were quite obscure. 

"The Mishna (Talmud) states that the Passover Lamb was roasted on a stick from a pomegranate tree," noted Rabbi Weiss. "When the Temple is built, we will need millions of these sticks." 

In 2017, the Sanhedrin planted 30 pomegranate trees which were a small step towards fulfilling the needs of the Third Temple. But this small step had great spiritual significance.

"Just as the animal sacrifices were used to fix and give sustenance for the world of animals, which includes Man, the vegetative elements of the Temple provided sustenance, spiritual and material, for the plant kingdom," Rabbi Hillel Weiss, the spokesman for the Sanhedrin explained to Breaking Israel News. 

"It is the lack of the Temple that has led to the sad state of the environment," Rabbi Weiss said. "This year especially, there have been so many forest fires, in Brazil, California, Australia, and in other places around the world. If the UN was really universal and not just a political tool, they would be leading this. But they don't. Fixing the environment has become big business and politics and this is killing the world."

"The forests need for us to connect them to their creator. We received this role in Eden and the proper expression of this is in the Temple from which the sustenance of the world begins."

"All this emphasis on 'global warming' is an abomination. The godless secular have taken a deep spiritual truth, that we are caretakers of the planet, and turned it into idolatry in which they claim that we can fix the global environment without Divine help. People who believe in the Bible need to take the lead in fixing the plant world and the proper focal point for this is the Temple."

Toward this end, the Sanhedrin began planting trees and vineyards five years ago. But, until this day, they were unable to utilize the fruits. For the first three years of their growth, grapevines or fruit trees planted in Israel are categorized as orla (ערלה, literally 'uncircumcised' and it is prohibited to eat the fruit. When the Temple stood, the fruit of the fourth year was considered neat revai (נטע רבעי) and had to be brought to be eaten in Jerusalem. 

When you enter the land and plant any tree for food, you shall regard its fruit as forbidden. Three years it shall be forbidden for you, not to be eaten. In the fourth year all its fruit shall be set aside for jubilation before Hashem; and only in the fifth year may you use its fruit--that its yield to you may be increased: I Hashem am your God. Leviticus 19:23-25

Fruit that is grown in the fifth year was permitted to be eaten in the normal manner. This commandment is still observed in Israel today even though there is no Temple standing in Jerusalem.

The fifteenth day of the Hebrew month of Shevat, commonly called Tu Beshvat, is named as the New Year for trees in the Mishna (oral law). Any tree planted before this day will be considered one year old on Tu Beshvat. After a tree has seen three of the holidays, it is no longer considered orla and the fruit grown after the fourth Tu Beshvat can be brought to Jerusalem.

On Tuesday, the day after the holiday of  Tu Beshvat, the fruit from the first trees and grapevines planted by the Sanhedrin will be fit to be used in the Temple.

"Israel is a relatively small country but has diverse climates that vary greatly," Rabbi Weiss explained. "Specific trees thrive in different areas of the country. Understanding this throught planting trees is a way of developing an intimate relationship with the land that embodies the relationship between the Jews and God."

"Jews have always celebrated the holiday of Tu Beshvat by planting trees but it is really a global holiday, as was seen when the House fo Prayer for All Nations stood in Jerusalem," Rabbi Weiss said. "People from all nations who believe in the Bible should accept this as the holiday to plant trees wherever they are, to fix the world of the vegetative."

In the Hebron Hills, the Sanhedrin planted 30 Cedars of Lebanon and several pomegranate trees. In Kochav Hashachar overlooking the Jordan Valley, they planted half an acre of grapevines surrounded by Cedars. 

In Shaarei Tikvah in Samaria, cinnamon trees, one of the 11 ingredients in the Temple incense, are ready to be planted. In Itamar, a vineyard of 200 vines has been dedicated to Temple use. Seven date palms were planted in the Western Negev for use in the Shavuot offering.

But you, O mountains of Yisrael, shall yield your produce and bear your fruit for My people Yisrael, for their return is near. Ezekiel 36:8

In Biblical times, planting trees was one of the ways ownership of the land was expressed, as was done by Abraham.

[Avraham] planted a tamarisk at Be'er Sheva, and invoked there the name of Hashem, the Everlasting God. Genesis 21:33

"The trees are also a graphic message to Donald Trump and all the other world leaders," Rabbi Weiss said, noting that this year, the Sanhedrin is planting trees in areas that are going to be surrounded by Palestinian controlled regions should the 'Deal of the Century' be enacted. 

"The Jews have returned and we have taken possession of the land, just as God commanded. The trees bear witness that the land is ours, that it is flourishing as never before, and that it is all for God's glory in the Temple in Jerusalem. Anyone who tries to divide the land, to defile the covenant, is putting himself where no man can be, no matter how great he thinks he is."

'Will There Still Be a Christian Community in 2050' - Church Leaders Concerned for Christianity's Future in Iraq

Christians in Iraq are continuing to flee the country even though the violence has slowed.

According to The Christian Post, families are choosing to leave the country that they say is becoming a “land of militias.”

“They feel there is no peace, law or justice here in Baghdad, and that our country has become a land of militias,” the parish priest, Father Nadheer Dako, told The Telegraph.

His parish, St. Joseph’s in Baghdad, once boasted some 5,000 families. Today, the church membership is about 150.

“It is true that people are no longer getting kidnapped as much, and the Islamic State is gone. But the infrastructure of the country has been ruined, and people want a better future, not so much for themselves but for their children,” Nasib Hana Jabril, a parishioner at the church, said.

Father Dako added that he has also noticed that much of Baghdad has declined, including its educational system.

“Returning here from London after six years, I've noticed how the quality of education in Baghdad has gone down in nearly all the primary schools. The new generation just have very little hope of making a life here anymore.”

With the population decreases, Dako said he worries about the future of Christianity in Iraq.

“Will there still be a Christian community here in Baghdad in 2050?”

The Christian population in Iraq has fallen from 1.5 million to about 250,000, Loay Mikhael, head of foreign relations for the Chaldean Syriac Assyrian Popular Council, said.

He said last week that the persecution Christians and other minorities face in Iraq is “unprecedented.” He even moved his family out of the country.

“We are all over the world,” he said, “not because of our choice, but because we were forced to flee. The challenge is tremendous.”

Mikhael said the Iraqi government has not helped those who have been displaced or tried “to do something tangibly on the ground to bring those communities back to their lives.”

“It’s really unspeakable,” he said.

99-Year-Old Has Read Through Bible 60 Times: 'Might as Well Make it 61'

A 99-year-old Tennessee church member who has read through the Bible 60 times recently embarked on her 61st journey through Scripture because, she says, “God shows me something new every time.”

The woman, known as “Miss Helen” to members of her congregation at The Church at Station Hill, in Spring Hill, Tenn., began reading through the Bible the 61st time after learning of a challenge by pastor Jay Strother, who urged church members to read through the Bible in one year.

The Baptist & Reflector recounted the inspiring story. The Bible-reading plan is part of Strother’s “The Whole Church in the Whole Word” challenge. 

“I’ve been through the Bible 60 times and I might as well make it 61,” she told Strother.

The U.S. was embroiled in World War II the first time she read through the Bible. The challenge that year was “Read the Bible through in ’42.”

Miss Helen still attends the Sunday morning 8 a.m. service, in person, the Baptist & Reflector reported.

Strother asked her, “Miss Helen, why do you still do it?” She replied, “God shows me something new every time.”

“She said you’d think I’ve heard these stories, but every time I read it or hear it being read, I catch something new,” Strother told the Baptist & Reflector.

Miss Helen’s commitment to reading Scripture, Strother said, should convict and inspire other Christians to read their Bible. 

“You could read the entire Bible through out loud in about 72 hours,” he said. “So in just a little more in the time that people usually watch TV – the typical American in two weeks – you could read the Bible through.” 

Strother added, “So, it’s not that we don’t have the time, it’s that we don’t choose the time.”

More than 550 others signed up for the challenge after Miss Helen committed to read through the Bible again, Strother told the Baptist & Reflector. 

“I love the idea that our senior saints can lead the way in setting that example for us,” he said.

Miss Helen turns 100 in March.

360 Billion Locusts and Growing - A Plague of Biblical Proportions

What we are witnessing in east Africa and across much of the Middle East right now is hard to believe.  360 billion locusts are eating everything in sight, and UN officials are warning that this plague of "Biblical proportions" could get many times worse over the next several months. Desert locusts can travel up to 93 miles a day, and each adult can consume the equivalent of its own weight in food every 24 hours.  These voracious little creatures are traveling in absolutely colossal swarms that are up to 40 miles wide, and they continue to push into new areas.  

If urgent action is not taken on a massive scale, millions upon millions of people could soon have next to nothing to eat. I have previously written about the horrors that this plague is causing in east Africa, but many people don't realize that this plague is devastating crops throughout the Middle East as well.

In fact, the government of Pakistan just declared a national emergency because of these locusts. A locust plague is wreaking havoc in Pakistan as 'unprecedented and alarming' swarms ravage crops as shocking video shows millions of the insects sweeping through Saudi Arabia.

Pakistan's government declared a national emergency at the weekend after an infestation of desert locusts arrived in eastern Pakistan.

In Saudi Arabia, the swarms have been so thick at times that they have completely blocked out the sun, and video footage coming out of that country is getting attention all over the world... Meanwhile swarms of locusts have been milling the skies in Saudi Arabia, with one video circulating online showing the sky saturated with the insects. Another shows a tree in Saudi Arabia crawling with desert locusts, which consume their own bodyweight in food each day.

But of course east Africa remains the hardest hit region, and UN officials are warning that a horrible famine could rapidly develop as a result of this plague.  The following comes from Scientific American...

Locust swarms of biblical proportions are threatening crops across a wide swath of Africa and southwest Asia--spurring alarm among top international officials. A major concern is famine. The United Nations is warning that mass swarms of desert locusts are endangering food supplies in eastern Africa. In response, officials in Rome mobilized an emergency briefing yesterday in a bid to raise money--noting the situation has a high potential to devolve into a full-blown crisis. It would be incredibly difficult for me to overstate the scale of this crisis.

According to the Daily Mail, the number of locusts has now reached 360 billion.. A locust plague decimating crops and livestock pastureland in east Africa, including swarms 40 miles wide, threatens to trigger a humanitarian crisis, the UN has warned.

The horde of 360 billion insects has laid waste to farmland across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, caused damage in Dijibouti and Eritrea, posing an unprecedented threat to food security. There are less than 8 billion people living on the entire planet. So this swarm of locusts outnumbers us by a margin of more than 45 to 1. And what these locusts want more than anything else is food.  If you doubt the destructive power of these swarms, please consider what the FAO's senior agriculture officer recently had to say...

"It's certainly the most dangerous migratory pest in the world, desert locust," said Keith Cressman, FAO's senior agriculture officer. "A swarm the size of Rome can eat enough food in one day as everybody in Kenya." And some of these swarms are actually bigger than the city of Rome.

I know that may be difficult to believe, but it is true. In Somalia, officials are calling this crisis "a national emergency" as the locusts consume "huge amounts of crops"... Somalia's agriculture ministry on Sunday called the outbreak a national emergency and major threat to the country's fragile food security, saying the "uncommonly large" locust swarms are consuming huge amounts of crops.

Over in Kenya, things are even worse.  At this point the only viable way to combat these swarms is to spray them, and the UN is desperately asking for financial help to aid in that effort...Just five planes are currently spraying as Kenyan and other authorities try to stop the locusts from spreading to neighboring Uganda and South Sudan. The United Nations has said $76 million is needed immediately to widen such efforts across East Africa.

A fast response is crucial. Experts warn that if left unchecked, the number of locusts could grow by 500 times by June, when drier weather will help bring the outbreak under control. UN officials keep claiming that the number of locusts could get 500 times larger over the next few months, but I am having a really hard time believing that this plague could possibly get much worse than it is now.

Unfortunately, conditions are very favorable for breeding, and these locusts are constantly searching for new sources of food.  They will continue to migrate in new directions, and they will eat crops everywhere they go. According to Scientific American, the breeding cycles over the next couple of months could push the locust swarms as far as India...

Cyclones that struck the driest parts of the Arabian Peninsula last year triggered the current crisis, creating ideal conditions for the desert locust species to multiply. Left to breed in isolated corners of Saudi Arabia and Yemen, the locust swarms crossed to the Horn of Africa where they were given further support by another cyclone. More breeding cycles are expected. The swarms increase in size twentyfold with each successive generation and could reach India by June. When I first told my wife about this locust plague she was absolutely horrified.

She wondered what all those people would eat if all their crops were gone.  Of course the truth is that they aren't going to have much of anything to eat.

These locusts are going to create a famine, and the more they eat the worse the famine will become. We have never seen anything like this before, and this is yet another "unprecedented crisis" that we can add to all the others that we are currently facing. Our planet is changing, global weather patterns are going absolutely nuts, and worldwide events are really starting to spiral out of control.

And at this point we are just a little over one month into 2020.  If you think that things are bad so far, just wait until you see what is coming over the course of the rest of the year.

'My Identity Is My Faith in Christ': Chiefs CEO Highlights His Faith after Winning AFC Championship

The chairman and CEO of the Kansas City Chiefs thanked the coaches, players and fans while accepting the AFC Championship trophy Sunday but also took a moment to credit God.  

“I want to thank the Lord for blessing us with the opportunity,” Clark Hunt said on national television. “The glory belongs to Him.”

The faith-centric moment was not an anomaly for Clark, who along with his siblings inherited ownership of the Chiefs following the death of their father, Lamar Hunt, in 2006. The elder Hunt founded the Chiefs and was co-founder of the American Football League, the predecessor to the AFC.

Hunt has been vocal about his Christian faith during his tenure, including the past few years as the Chiefs have become one of the NFL’s most dominant teams. The Chiefs will play San Francisco in the Super Bowl Feb. 2.

“We want our employees to develop spiritually,” Hunt said last year while speaking to a men’s luncheon in Tyler, Texas. He became a Christian at age 10, he told the men. “In the National Football League, Christ is really glorified. My identity is my faith in Christ.”

Hunt and his wife, Tavia, partnered with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 2014 to launch a non-denominational chapel service for fans attending the Chiefs’ Sunday games. Services are held at the Pavilion, a structure next to the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium. About 350 fans attended the first service – most of them wearing Chiefs’ apparel. Eight people accepted Christ during the first service, according to FCA.

Clark and Tavia Hunt attend the services. 

“It’s neat that he makes the effort for him and his family to come,” Kris Thomas, an FCA area representative, told FCA.org in a profile about the chapel services. “... I haven’t been here where they haven’t been here."

Supporters hope other NFL teams copy the concept.

“I love it because it’s evangelism,” Alex Campbell, FCA’s Kansas City center area director, told FCA.org. “You get to walk alongside people who you don’t get to meet every day. I’m all for that.”

Many fans arrive early to the games in order to attend the chapel service. When it’s over, they tailgate. 

“You’re establishing a new culture,” Campbell said. “You get to see this thing come to fruition where lives can be changed. Now people are actually saying, ‘If this happens, then I’ll get season tickets [for next year].’ The service has that much of an impact, and the season-ticket holders are saying, ‘We need this.’ It’s got to be fulfillment for the Hunt family for even having the vision.”

Volcano Erupts in the Philippines, Forces at Least 300,000 to Evacuate

A plume of ash, steam and pebbles filled the sky near Manila, Philippines on Sunday as Taal, one of the world’s smallest active volcanoes, erupted.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the cloud of gas and ash shot 10 to 15 kilometers in the air as the eruption began. 

Reports show that light to mud-thick ash has been falling over towns and cities several kilometers away from the volcano. 

Authorities have issued a “total evacuation” order for people living around Taal and near Manila, the country’s capital. So far, around 300,000 people have been evacuated from their homes, including 6,000 villagers who live on an island in the middle of the lake the volcano sits on. 

Officials are urging all other residents in affected areas to stay inside if at all possible and to wear masks and goggles for protection. Motorists have also been cautioned to stay off the roads, as wet ash can become quite slippery.

Last erupting between 1965 and 1977, Taal – which is located 60 kilometers south of Manila – has been showing signs of a possible eruption since 1991. In 2019, PHIVOLCS raised the volcano to a level one alert, as heavy volcanic activity began occurring, including 57 volcanic earthquakes between November 11 and 12. On Sunday, PHIVOLCS raised the alert level again to a level four. According to the Associated Press, a level four alert indicates that “a hazardous eruption may happen within hours or days.” If the volcano reaches a level five – the highest level in the alert system - it would indicate that a hazardous eruption is underway and could affect an expansive area. 

AccuWeater reports that the condition of the volcano became increasingly concerning Monday morning when lava began to spew from it. Reportedly, officials fear the eruption could last months or even years. 

“We have asked people in high-risk areas, including the volcano island, to evacuate now ahead of a possible hazardous eruption,” Renato Solidum, the head of PHIVOLCS, said in a statement.

According to the Associated Press, power outages have been reported across the island country. Manila’s international airport was also shut down Sunday night. “Due to volcanic ash in the vicinity of the airport” all flights, departing from and incoming to the Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport, were suspended, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines said in a statement. According to Business Traveller, as of mid-day Monday, Manila International Airport resumed partial operations.

No injuries have been reported at the time of this writing.

Palestinians Could Benefit So Much from Peace with Israel 

When US President Donald Trump stated that Jerusalem is the eternal capital of Israel, he was merely acknowledging what everyone already knew. Jerusalem has been the heart of Israel for over 3,000 years -- and, like it or not, has served as the Jewish state's administrative center for the past 70 years.

But that didn't stop the Arab nations from condemning, vilifying, and even threatening the US. This despite the fact that under Israel's control, Jerusalem has been a city open to people of all religious backgrounds, and its holy sites are open to everyone without restriction. 

This certainly was not the case when the city was ruled by Arab Muslims.

Let us not forget that the Arab states rejected the UN Partition Plan of 1947, which would have created a Palestinian state. The Arabs wanted war so that they could throw the Jews into the sea. But they failed. And so, the Arabs tried again, and again, and again -- each time losing more and more territory to Israel.

Only Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was smart enough to try a different approach, and managed to regain the Sinai Peninsula from Israel by offering peace. All Israel wants, surrounded as it is by over 20 Arab countries, is to live quietly in its little corner of the Middle East.

Arabs say that Jerusalem is sacred to Muslims, but it is sacred also to the Jews and Christians. Muslims tend to sidestep the fact that they also have Mecca and Medina, in addition to numerous holy sites in Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Egypt.

The Jews, meanwhile, have this one holy city, which they happily open to all. Arab states should instead focus on all the ways in which Israel has surpassed them. It is the only true democracy in the region, it is a first-world country in a backward Middle East, and it is a world leader in technology, medicine, and other fields of science.

All the Arab states have managed to export of late is terrorism.

And yet, many in the Middle East, from Gaza to Lebanon to Iraq to Iran, still believe that in order to achieve peace and stability in the region, Israel must be destroyed.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir's famous quote still rings true for me as an Arab living in this twisted reality: "We will only have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us."

We Arabs should have taken a lesson from the Japanese, who knew that following World War II, they could not continue to view America as an enemy if they wanted to move forward. And so, despite the fact that America had nuked two of their cities, the Japanese began a new chapter, in which America was portrayed as a friend, partner -- and, eventually, an ally. 

It was this courageous first step that enabled Japan to emerge from the ashes of World War II and become the advanced first-world nation it is today. The Palestinians and Arabs must do the same.

Church Buildings Burned Down in Southeastern Sudan

JUBA, South Sudan, January 23, 2020 (Morning Star News) – Temporary worship structures in southeastern Sudan were set ablaze on Jan. 16, three weeks after the buildings they had replaced were burned down, sources said.

In southeastern Sudan’s Blue Nile state, Islamists in Bout, Tadamon District were suspected of burning down the structures erected after arsonists on Dec. 28 razed the worship buildings of the Sudan Interior Church, Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox Church, according to local news reports and a source in South Sudan close to the border area.

“This incident is true, the three churches were set on fire twice in less than a month,” the pastor in Maban, whose name is withheld for security reasons, told Morning Star News.

Some Bout area Muslims were upset about the presence of the churches there, and they are suspected in the fires, he said.

A rights organization reportedly criticized police for taking no action after area Christians requested an investigation.

Sudanese Minister of Religious Affairs Nasr al-Din Mufreh issued a statement saying police had arrested and questioned a suspect who was released to due lack of evidence, according to one report. Asserting that only one church building was burned, Mufreh said Sudan was committed to religious freedom and protecting houses of worship from any threats.

Police will continue investigating, he said in the statement, issued while he was on an official visit to Washington, D.C.

“If it is proven that it occurred as a result of a criminal offense, the perpetrators will be identified, pursued and brought to justice,” he reportedly said.

In light of advances in religious freedom since former President Omar al-Bashir was ousted in April, the U.S. State Department announced on Dec. 20 that Sudan had been removed from the list of Countries of Particular Concern (CPC) that engage or tolerate “systematic, ongoing and egregious violations of religious freedom” and was upgraded to a watch list.

Sudan had been designated a CPC by the U.S. State Department since 1999.

Following the secession of South Sudan in 2011, Bashir had vowed to adopt a stricter version of sharia (Islamic law) and recognize only Islamic culture and the Arabic language. Church leaders said Sudanese authorities demolished or confiscated churches and limited Christian literature on the pretext that most Christians have left the country following South Sudan’s secession.

In April 2013 the then-Sudanese Minister of Guidance and Endowments announced that no new licenses would be granted for building new churches in Sudan, citing a decrease in the South Sudanese population. Sudan since 2012 has expelled foreign Christians and bulldozed church buildings. Besides raiding Christian bookstores and arresting Christians, authorities threatened to kill South Sudanese Christians who did not leave or cooperate with them in their effort to find other Christians.

After Bashir was deposed, military leaders initially formed a military council to rule the country, but further demonstrations led them to accept a transitional government of civilians and military figures, with a predominantly civilian government to be democratically elected in three years.

Christians are expected to have greater voice under the new administration.

Among 11 people appointed to a Sovereignty Council to oversee the transition to civilian rule in Sudan is Raja Nicola Eissa Abdel-Masih, a Coptic Christian who long served as a judge in Sudan’s Ministry of Justice. She was one of six civilians appointed to the council on Aug. 21.

Religious Affairs Minister Mufreh told Asharq Al-Awsat his ministry would fight terrorism, extremism and takfiri notions – punishments for leaving Islam. Mufreh previously worked as a leader in the Al-Ansar Mosque in Rabak, south of Khartoum.

The new government that was sworn in on Sept. 8, led by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, an economist, is tasked with governing during a transition period of 39 months. It faces the challenges of rooting out longstanding corruption and an Islamist “deep state” rooted in Bashir’s 30 years of power.

Sudan ranked 7^th on Christian support organization Open Doors’ 2020 World Watch List of the countries where it is most difficult to be a Christian.

Pastor: Prayer Saved My Life after Heart Stopped

A United Kingdom pastor says it was the power of prayer that brought him back to life after he was dead for 15 minutes.

According to CBN News, Christopher Wickland, pastor of Living Word Pentecostal Church in Fareham, Hampshire, died in November. He had been jumping on a trampoline at a trampoline park with three of his children when he collapsed.

Wickland, 47, was administered CPR and staff at the trampoline park also used a defibrillator four times on him. He stopped breathing for 15 minutes.

When his heart restarted, he was taken to the intensive care unit of St. Mary's Hospital.

Doctors told Wickland’s wife that because his heart stopped for so long, they were worried about brain and heart damage.

Wickland’s wife, Tracey, posted about the news to her Facebook page.

"I put it on Facebook and it was amazing because hundreds of people from around the world contacted me and told me they were praying for Chris," she told The Daily Mail, adding that while the jump park staff and doctors did an "incredible job," her husband would be dead "if it wasn't for all these people praying.”

Wickland spent almost 48 hours in an induced coma. He woke up on a Sunday morning during the church’s morning services.

"This is a miracle that is all down to divine providence and the very quick actions of some people," Wickland told The Daily Mail. "My congregation and other Christians around the world were also praying for me. All this power was harnessed to keep me alive. I'm not lucky, I'm blessed."

Wickland said doctors told him there’s nothing wrong with him even though he stopped breathing.

“They can't believe that I died for so long and there's no permanent damage,” he said, calling the ordeal “nothing short of a miracle.”

He has returned to his preaching duties.

This Decade Showed Us That If We Lose Sola Scriptura, We Lose Everything               
   

The 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, the approach of Pope Francis to evangelicals, or the debates about the meaning of marriage, are among some of the big issues that have been discussed among evangelicals in the last ten years. We start a new series of interviews, to review the main issues that have marked the decade, and to try to learn lessons for the immediate future.  Our first interviewee is José Hutter, pastor and Chair of the Theology Group of the Spanish Evangelical Alliance, who addresses the challenges evangelical Christians have faced this last decade, regarding theology.

Question. One of the most prominent events of the decade was the commemoration of the 500 years of the Protestant Reformation and its main principles, during 2017. Are these principles still in force? 

Answer. These five principles, the five Solas, are absolutely necessary to formulate the belief of the Protestant churches, and I am convinced that it is absolutely what the Bible teaches us, the foundations of the Christian faith. These five principles were not formulated by the Reformers, but they come from them. Sola Scriptura is essential, because everything starts there. It is an excellent antidote against the trends of our time, and essential to formulate a coherent Christian ethic. 

The principle of Christ Alone, which says that salvation is only in Him and that there is no other mediator, cannot be left out, especially when we dialogue with other religions. And by Grace Alone shows that salvation is a gift from God. There are only two religious systems in the world. On the one hand, the religions of the works, where man has to be good so that God can be satisfied, something that you have to prove. And on the other hand, there is the grace of God, a gift to which there is nothing to do.  There is no other religious system that has this, it is something unique to Christianity. All this is received by Faith Alone, the fourth principle. And finally, Glory to God Alone. Nowadays, but also during the history of the church, many wanted to stand out among others. We give too much importance to ourselves. But it is an act of humility to remember that we do not matter, only God matters.

1. Talking about the first principle that you pointed out, there has been some discussion on the nature of the Bible lately, its authority. 
2. Yes, there was already in the past, because on this issue Protestantism does not speak with a unified voice. There are some rationalist sectors that try to interpret Scripture by putting human reason above Scripture, and adapting it to the latest trends in thought. We have to be realistic and say that worldwide there is a segment that can be a minority, but very important, that has this tendency. 

However, for all who appreciate this Protestant tradition, putting the Bible above our opinions, beliefs or philosophies is key. If we lose this we have lost everything. I have just returned from Germany and it is absolutely terrible to be in a Christmas service where the pastor reduces his message to "we have to love each other", and there is no mention of the historical facts, of the foundations of our faith. That is the image of the Protestant church that we give to others. If we lose the Sola Scriptura, the foundation of the church, we lose everything.

1. What do you think of the moves of the Catholic church to approach evangelicals in the last decade? Pope Francis has participated in worship services, receptions to pastors and ceremonies commemorating the Protesant Reformation. A. It has been much ado about nothing. Once the anniversary passed, you can hardly see more gestures. I thought that perhaps the Roman Catholic church, in an act of generosity, was going to suspend the excommunication of Martin Luther, but that did not happen. 

Technically, Luther remains a heretic according to the canons of the Roman Catholic Church. The Pope approaches evangelicals, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists and the whole world alike. Regarding theology, I am not aware that the Catholic Church has rectified anything, for example, the canon IX of the Council of Trent, which condemns the belief of salvation only by faith . The fact that the Pope participates in a ceremony with a liberal and rationalist historic church, such as the Swedish, says absolutely nothing to me.

1. Another important topic of discussion this decade has been the meaning of marriage and homosexual relationships. These  are increasingly being accepted in our Western culture, including the blessing of same-sex couples. What impact has the thrust of this opening trend had on the churches? 
2. Globally, it has had an obvious impact in Western countries, specially in North America or Central and Northern Europe. But the impact is less in Latin America, Africa or Asia. 

For example, gay marriage seems to have been the most important issue these last years in Protestant classical churches, in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden or the United Kingdom. But almost irrelevant in Africa or Asia. This topic is very related to Sola Scriptura. As Christians, we are called to love everyody, and that includes homosexuals. But from a Biblical, Old and New Testament point of view, it is a practice that the Bible forbids. Opening to it means to abandon the principle of the authority of Scripture. Therefore, it is something incompatible with the Christian faith.

1. This issue has produced striking ruptures, within historical denominations such as the Presbyterian Church, and there is a current debate in the Anglican Church. 
2. The debate in the Anglican church will probably lead to a break. In other churches, like Scandinavia, I see little evidence, as well as in Germany. 

The minority of many free churches, prevents it from being a very important issue. In Spain it has not been raised, but it will come. But this happens in the Western world. In places such as Asia, Latin America and Africa, where there are the majority of evangelicals, this issue is not relevant.

1. During this decade, the biggest evangelical growth has maninly taken place in Latin America, Africa or Asia. There is a slow general decline in North America and Europe. Is this having an impact on theology? 
2. I personally belong to a mission agency that has about 2,000 missionaries around the world, and the international centre moved from London to Singapore a decade ago. The center of gravity of evangelical Christianity is no longer in the West, but in Asia, Africa and Latin America. 

Personally, I am not in favor of formulating a "theology of the South" or something like that, but it is evident that these very vibrant churches have an enthusiasm to approach the Christian faith that is very different from ours, which is very intellectualist. They put a lot of emphasis on experience, on faith in daily life. 

As an impact on the Christian faith I think that is positive, because it gives balance. But I think we can also contribute with our experience, with our theology. Both things are needed: experience and enthusiasm, channeled in a reasonable way by systematized biblical teaching. And we should not throw in the towel with Europe. We must not forget that the times of the Reformation were perhaps worse than these ones, so that we must not lose hope.

1. Is there anything else you want to mention? 
2. My desire and prayer for the next decade is to see a revival. In our churches, we let the spirit of the moment to affect us. There is fatigue, the West, Europe, is a tired continent. I pray that we will recover a vibrant vision of our faith, so that each day we live a love story with the Lord Jesus Christ, experiencing the joy of what awaits us - the blessed hope of heaven. 

Knowing what we have already received, and waiting for what we will receive, we should live the faith with an enthusiasm that infects others. This is my desire, something that I think we are all called to recover. May faith be something to live and to die for.

State Department Cites Religious Freedom Violators

WASHINGTON (RNS) — The State Department issued its latest designations of the world’s most serious violators of religious freedom, moving Sudan down to its next-tier watchlist.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the decisions on Friday (Dec. 20), including the shift of Sudan’s status, which he attributed to “significant steps taken by the civilian-led transitional government to address the previous regime’s ‘systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.’”

Sam Brownback, the U.S. ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom, told reporters in a conference call Thursday there has been a halt in the raids on house churches and related movements in the predominantly Muslim country.

“They've stopped bulldozing churches; they've redesignated Christmas — both the normal Christmas and Orthodox Christmas — as national holidays,” the ambassador said. “They have brought, now, people of other faiths into the new cabinet.”

Brownback said he hopes the change in the department’s designation of Sudan will give the new government “breathing room” as its leaders seek to continue to put reforms in place following the ouster of Omar al-Bashir after his 30-year rule.

The department on Wednesday retained its designation for the nine other countries that had been categorized as “countries of particular concern”: Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Brownback said Nigeria had been added to the department’s “special watch list” for the first time because of conditions in the West African country, where there have been conflicts between the Muslim majority and Christian minority populations.

“It is a dangerous situation in too many parts of Nigeria, and the government has either not been willing to or been ineffective in their response, and the violence continues to grow,” he said.

Other countries on the second-tier list now include Cuba and Nicaragua. They join Comoros, Russia, and Uzbekistan.

The department also designated the following militant groups as “entities of particular concern”: Nusra Front; al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula; al-Qaida; al-Shabab; Boko Haram; the Houthis; the Islamic State group, or ISIS; ISIS-Khorasan; and the Taliban.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom welcomed the latest State Department decisions.

“By calling out the governments that perpetrated or tolerated the most severe religious freedom violations globally in the past year, these designations send a strong signal that the U.S. government will not stand for these abuses,” said USCIRF Chair Tony Perkins in a statement.

Brownback said his office will be working to build new alliances related to religious freedom in the coming year.

He said he plans to attend the Jan. 15-16 launch at the Vatican of an “Abrahamic faith initiative” that will gather Jewish, Christian and Muslim theologians in efforts to promote peace in countries where members of those faiths have faced tensions and violence.

“In the world, we're either going to learn how to respect and love one another or we're going to kill each other,” Brownback said. “This is really the time, I think, for faith communities and the faithful to step up as an instrument for peace in a world that sees far too much violence.”

He also is planning a Feb. 5-6 kickoff event for the International Religious Freedom Alliance, the creation of which Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced in July at the State Department’s second Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom.

Baseball All-Star Invites Fans to Read Through Bible with Him, 13,000 Join

One of Major League Baseball’s best pitchers is reading through the Bible in a single year – and he’s inviting everyone to take the journey with him.

Adam Wainwright, a veteran pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals, told his Twitter followers last week that he would begin reading selections each day from the Old and New Testaments and Psalms on Jan. 12 as part of an endeavor to read through God’s Word in one year. 

He also set up a Twitter account dedicated to the effort and invited fans to read with him. Thus far, 13,500 have followed his new account Walking With Waino, where he posts updates about the daily readings.

“This is a cool opportunity for me to walk through God's Word in community with you,” he wrote. “It's my prayer that this would be a blessing and a daily encouragement to you all.”

Wainwright, 38, is a two-time World Series champion and three-time National League All-Star. He’s also led the league twice in wins.

His Bible study invitation began with a simple message posted on his primary Twitter account, which has 285,400 followers.

“Hey everybody,” he wrote. “This won't be for everyone, but it's an important part of my life.  Most of y'all probably just want to talk baseball, etc.  BUT, if you want to read through the Bible with me In one year you can join my other twitter account … @walkingwwaino.”

Soon, thousands had signed up. Wainwright’s church, St. Simons Community Church in Georgia, set up a webpage dedicated to the journey. Bible readers can sign up on the website to receive daily journal insights from him via email.

Wainwright seemed surprised by the reaction.

“I can't believe the response on here so far!” he wrote on Twitter.

Wainwright is known for his Christian faith. His Twitter bio reads, “Follower of Jesus. Husband, daddy, outdoor lovin, sweet tea drinkin, Chick-fil-A eatin, barbecue smashin, fantasy football dominatin, STL pitchin, Georgia boy.”

He’s received plenty of positive feedback.

“Your post was a complete God wink for my family,” one person wrote on Twitter. “My 15-year-old just said not even a week ago that we should read the Bible in a year. I open Twitter today and here you are...we are both thrilled and can’t wait to start!”

Another wrote, “I’m in. I love baseball but I love Jesus and his word more! I am not a Cardinals fan but I am a fan of yours.”

1. Talking about the first principle that you pointed out, there has been some discussion on the nature of the Bible lately, its authority. 
2. Yes, there was already in the past, because on this issue Protestantism does not speak with a unified voice. There are some rationalist sectors that try to interpret Scripture by putting human reason above Scripture, and adapting it to the latest trends in thought. We have to be realistic and say that worldwide there is a segment that can be a minority, but very important, that has this tendency. 

However, for all who appreciate this Protestant tradition, putting the Bible above our opinions, beliefs or philosophies is key. If we lose this we have lost everything. I have just returned from Germany and it is absolutely terrible to be in a Christmas service where the pastor reduces his message to "we have to love each other", and there is no mention of the historical facts, of the foundations of our faith. That is the image of the Protestant church that we give to others. If we lose the Sola Scriptura, the foundation of the church, we lose everything.

1. What do you think of the moves of the Catholic church to approach evangelicals in the last decade? Pope Francis has participated in worship services, receptions to pastors and ceremonies commemorating the Protesant Reformation. A. It has been much ado about nothing. Once the anniversary passed, you can hardly see more gestures. I thought that perhaps the Roman Catholic church, in an act of generosity, was going to suspend the excommunication of Martin Luther, but that did not happen. 

Technically, Luther remains a heretic according to the canons of the Roman Catholic Church. The Pope approaches evangelicals, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists and the whole world alike. Regarding theology, I am not aware that the Catholic Church has rectified anything, for example, the canon IX of the Council of Trent, which condemns the belief of salvation only by faith . The fact that the Pope participates in a ceremony with a liberal and rationalist historic church, such as the Swedish, says absolutely nothing to me.

1. Another important topic of discussion this decade has been the meaning of marriage and homosexual relationships. These  are increasingly being accepted in our Western culture, including the blessing of same-sex couples. What impact has the thrust of this opening trend had on the churches? 
2. Globally, it has had an obvious impact in Western countries, specially in North America or Central and Northern Europe. But the impact is less in Latin America, Africa or Asia. 

For example, gay marriage seems to have been the most important issue these last years in Protestant classical churches, in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden or the United Kingdom. But almost irrelevant in Africa or Asia. This topic is very related to Sola Scriptura. As Christians, we are called to love everyody, and that includes homosexuals. But from a Biblical, Old and New Testament point of view, it is a practice that the Bible forbids. Opening to it means to abandon the principle of the authority of Scripture. Therefore, it is something incompatible with the Christian faith.

1. This issue has produced striking ruptures, within historical denominations such as the Presbyterian Church, and there is a current debate in the Anglican Church. 
2. The debate in the Anglican church will probably lead to a break. In other churches, like Scandinavia, I see little evidence, as well as in Germany. 

The minority of many free churches, prevents it from being a very important issue. In Spain it has not been raised, but it will come. But this happens in the Western world. In places such as Asia, Latin America and Africa, where there are the majority of evangelicals, this issue is not relevant.

1. During this decade, the biggest evangelical growth has maninly taken place in Latin America, Africa or Asia. There is a slow general decline in North America and Europe. Is this having an impact on theology? 
2. I personally belong to a mission agency that has about 2,000 missionaries around the world, and the international centre moved from London to Singapore a decade ago. The center of gravity of evangelical Christianity is no longer in the West, but in Asia, Africa and Latin America. 

Personally, I am not in favor of formulating a "theology of the South" or something like that, but it is evident that these very vibrant churches have an enthusiasm to approach the Christian faith that is very different from ours, which is very intellectualist. They put a lot of emphasis on experience, on faith in daily life. 

As an impact on the Christian faith I think that is positive, because it gives balance. But I think we can also contribute with our experience, with our theology. Both things are needed: experience and enthusiasm, channeled in a reasonable way by systematized biblical teaching. And we should not throw in the towel with Europe. We must not forget that the times of the Reformation were perhaps worse than these ones, so that we must not lose hope.

1. Is there anything else you want to mention? 
2. My desire and prayer for the next decade is to see a revival. In our churches, we let the spirit of the moment to affect us. There is fatigue, the West, Europe, is a tired continent. I pray that we will recover a vibrant vision of our faith, so that each day we live a love story with the Lord Jesus Christ, experiencing the joy of what awaits us - the blessed hope of heaven. 

Knowing what we have already received, and waiting for what we will receive, we should live the faith with an enthusiasm that infects others. This is my desire, something that I think we are all called to recover. May faith be something to live and to die for.

State Department Cites Religious Freedom Violators

WASHINGTON (RNS) — The State Department issued its latest designations of the world’s most serious violators of religious freedom, moving Sudan down to its next-tier watchlist.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the decisions on Friday (Dec. 20), including the shift of Sudan’s status, which he attributed to “significant steps taken by the civilian-led transitional government to address the previous regime’s ‘systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.’”

Sam Brownback, the U.S. ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom, told reporters in a conference call Thursday there has been a halt in the raids on house churches and related movements in the predominantly Muslim country.

“They've stopped bulldozing churches; they've redesignated Christmas — both the normal Christmas and Orthodox Christmas — as national holidays,” the ambassador said. “They have brought, now, people of other faiths into the new cabinet.”

Brownback said he hopes the change in the department’s designation of Sudan will give the new government “breathing room” as its leaders seek to continue to put reforms in place following the ouster of Omar al-Bashir after his 30-year rule.

The department on Wednesday retained its designation for the nine other countries that had been categorized as “countries of particular concern”: Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Brownback said Nigeria had been added to the department’s “special watch list” for the first time because of conditions in the West African country, where there have been conflicts between the Muslim majority and Christian minority populations.

“It is a dangerous situation in too many parts of Nigeria, and the government has either not been willing to or been ineffective in their response, and the violence continues to grow,” he said.

Other countries on the second-tier list now include Cuba and Nicaragua. They join Comoros, Russia, and Uzbekistan.

The department also designated the following militant groups as “entities of particular concern”: Nusra Front; al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula; al-Qaida; al-Shabab; Boko Haram; the Houthis; the Islamic State group, or ISIS; ISIS-Khorasan; and the Taliban.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom welcomed the latest State Department decisions.

“By calling out the governments that perpetrated or tolerated the most severe religious freedom violations globally in the past year, these designations send a strong signal that the U.S. government will not stand for these abuses,” said USCIRF Chair Tony Perkins in a statement.

Brownback said his office will be working to build new alliances related to religious freedom in the coming year.

He said he plans to attend the Jan. 15-16 launch at the Vatican of an “Abrahamic faith initiative” that will gather Jewish, Christian and Muslim theologians in efforts to promote peace in countries where members of those faiths have faced tensions and violence.

“In the world, we're either going to learn how to respect and love one another or we're going to kill each other,” Brownback said. “This is really the time, I think, for faith communities and the faithful to step up as an instrument for peace in a world that sees far too much violence.”

He also is planning a Feb. 5-6 kickoff event for the International Religious Freedom Alliance, the creation of which Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced in July at the State Department’s second Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom.

Baseball All-Star Invites Fans to Read Through Bible with Him, 13,000 Join

One of Major League Baseball’s best pitchers is reading through the Bible in a single year – and he’s inviting everyone to take the journey with him.

Adam Wainwright, a veteran pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals, told his Twitter followers last week that he would begin reading selections each day from the Old and New Testaments and Psalms on Jan. 12 as part of an endeavor to read through God’s Word in one year. 

He also set up a Twitter account dedicated to the effort and invited fans to read with him. Thus far, 13,500 have followed his new account Walking With Waino, where he posts updates about the daily readings.

“This is a cool opportunity for me to walk through God's Word in community with you,” he wrote. “It's my prayer that this would be a blessing and a daily encouragement to you all.”

Wainwright, 38, is a two-time World Series champion and three-time National League All-Star. He’s also led the league twice in wins.

His Bible study invitation began with a simple message posted on his primary Twitter account, which has 285,400 followers.

“Hey everybody,” he wrote. “This won't be for everyone, but it's an important part of my life.  Most of y'all probably just want to talk baseball, etc.  BUT, if you want to read through the Bible with me In one year you can join my other twitter account … @walkingwwaino.”

Soon, thousands had signed up. Wainwright’s church, St. Simons Community Church in Georgia, set up a webpage dedicated to the journey. Bible readers can sign up on the website to receive daily journal insights from him via email.

Wainwright seemed surprised by the reaction.

“I can't believe the response on here so far!” he wrote on Twitter.

Wainwright is known for his Christian faith. His Twitter bio reads, “Follower of Jesus. Husband, daddy, outdoor lovin, sweet tea drinkin, Chick-fil-A eatin, barbecue smashin, fantasy football dominatin, STL pitchin, Georgia boy.”

He’s received plenty of positive feedback.

“Your post was a complete God wink for my family,” one person wrote on Twitter. “My 15-year-old just said not even a week ago that we should read the Bible in a year. I open Twitter today and here you are...we are both thrilled and can’t wait to start!”

Another wrote, “I’m in. I love baseball but I love Jesus and his word more! I am not a Cardinals fan but I am a fan of yours.”

China Just Escalated Their Brutal Persecution of Christians           

Approximately one out of every seven people on the entire planet lives in China, and it has become one of the most dystopian societies that the world has ever seen. Surveillance cameras, government spies and facial recognition scanners are everywhere, and the totalitarian "social credit score" system that is currently being rolled out is an absolute nightmare.  And the Chinese government is not content to simply control how people behave. They also want to literally control what people believe, and the ongoing crackdown on the Christian faith has been absolutely brutal.  Over the past several years, scores of pastors have been arrested, countless underground churches have been shut down, and thousands of Bibles have been burned.  

Unfortunately, that wasn't enough for Chinese officials, and so they have now taken things to an entirely new level. When the communists first came to power in China, it was a very dark time for Christians.  But underground churches started blossoming even in the midst of the persecution, and eventually there were a few decades where the national government more or less tolerated unsanctioned gatherings.  

Today, it has been estimated that there are more than 100 million Christians in China, and it is being projected that China may actually have more Christians that any other nation on the planet by the year 2030. Needless to say, the communists don't like any threats to their power, and they see this underground movement as a very serious threat.

Under the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the persecution of unofficial churches has steadily escalated.  This year they actually tried to ban Christians from gathering on Christmas, and a series of new regulations has just been introduced that requires "total submission to the Chinese Communist Party at all times"...

A new mandate entitled "Administrative Measures for Religious Groups" has been approved by the CPC and is comprised of six chapters and 41 articles dealing with the organization, functions, offices, supervision, projects and economic administration of religious communities.

The new rules also seek to ensure that religious leaders support, promote and implement total submission to the Chinese Communist Party at all times. So what does that sort of "submission" look like?

Well, in some cases officials have required churches to take down pictures of Jesus and replace them with pictures of President Xi Jinping. Yes, this is how twisted things have become in China.

The new regulations also require all churches to "spread the principles and policies of the Chinese Communist Party" in all of their activities... According to International Christian Concern, Article 5 of the new ordinance reads that "religious organizations must adhere to the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, observe the constitution, laws, regulations, ordinances and policies, adhere to the principle of independence and self-government, adhere to the directives on religions in China, implementing the values ​​of socialism ..."

In addition, Article 17 specifies that all religious organizations "must spread the principles and policies of the Chinese Communist Party" in everything they do. Any church that does not go along is likely to be raided and shut down at any time.

For example, Pastor Wang Yi once led one of the most important underground churches in all of China, but his church was raided and he was arrested.

And now we have learned that he has just been sentenced to nine years in prison... Wang Yi, a leader in one of the most well-known Christian congregations in China, has been quietly sentenced to nine years in prison, according to a statement on the website of the Intermediate People's Court of Chengdu Municipality.

The sentencing is the latest incident in an ongoing crackdown on organized religion in China. Early Rain Covenant Church, which Wang founded in 2008, attracted about 500 followers and was considered one of the most influential "underground churches" in China, operating independently of the state. According to Chinese officials, Pastor Yi received such a harsh sentence for "subverting state power".

Of course it isn't just pastors that are being arrested.  Countless numbers of ordinary Chinese citizens have been swept up during the raids, and many are never seen or heard from again. One Chinese Christian woman told the Los Angeles Times what happened to her when she was interrogated... Li Chengju glared at her prison interrogator as he pressed her to renounce her Christian church and condemn her pastor. Her captor warned she would not be so lucky as the pastor, who was locked in secret detention but at least might get a day in court.

"Look at you. You sweep the floors at church," the interrogator said. "You think you're getting a trial like your pastor? You don't qualify." The way that the Chinese are treating their citizens is absolutely reprehensible, and unless they completely change course we should not be conducting any trade with them at all.

Sadly, the "five-year plan" that was launched in 2018 to indoctrinate churches all over China is not even halfway done...The government calls its campaign "Sinicization" -- a euphemism for turning faith into a tool for indoctrination in Chinese Communist Party ideology. The official five-year plan, issued in 2018, calls for inserting "patriotic education" and "socialist core values" into churches, revising the Bible and using church sermons to enforce party leadership and reject foreign influences.

The persecution of Christians is likely to get even worse in China, and this comes at a time when Christian persecution is on the rise all over the world.  This is something that many of us have been anticipating because of the times in which we live, but it is still horrifying to actually watch it happen. As I close this article, I would like to share a message from Pastor Wang Yi that was posted on Facebook after he was arrested.  May his words inspire all of us to live every moment and to be the people that we were created to be...

"I hope God uses me, by means of first losing my personal freedom, to tell those who have deprived me of my personal freedom that there is an authority higher than their authority, and that there is a freedom that they cannot restrain, a freedom that fills the church of the crucified and risen Jesus Christ."

"Regardless of what crime the government charges me with, whatever filth they fling at me, as long as this charge is related to my faith, my writings, my comments, and my teachings, it is merely a lie and temptation of demons. I categorically deny it. I will serve my sentence, but I will not serve the law. I will be executed, but I will not plead guilty."

"Those who lock me up will one day be locked up by angels. Those who interrogate me will finally be questioned and judged by Christ. Former NFL Player Brian Bosworth Apologizes for Rudeness toward Cashier after 30 Years, Says God Changed His Attitude

Social media often is a source of division, but two days after Christmas, it allowed a football legend to right an overlooked 30-year wrong. 

The incident began when the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks announced that former player Brian Bosworth – who played for the team for two seasons in the late 1980s prior to a career-ending injury – would be raising the Seahawks’ “12th man flag” in a traditional pregame ceremony prior to the team’s game with San Francisco. 

That sparked pushback from several fans, who remembered Bosworth as a controversial self-centered player. Bosworth was an All-American linebacker at the University of Oklahoma and was drafted in the first round, but made it clear he didn’t want to play for the Seahawks. Still, he eventually signed with the organization. 

“I was a young mother working a job in retail when ‘Boz’ was playing for Seattle,” one woman named Tammy wrote on Twitter. “He came through my check out line one day and was extremely rude. He actually said ‘do you know who I am???’ I didn’t at the time, but I will never forget how he made me feel. Not a fan.”

Bosworth saw her Tweet and quickly responded, telling her he had changed.

“So sorry that our interaction was unpleasant when I was young,” he wrote, “... back then I tended to be all about me & nothing about HIM … standing alone is being in darkness … being close to HIM life is very bright and full of Grace so our next interaction will be much brighter @Tammy80008759.”

The apology stood out on Twitter – a platform where humility is rare. 

“I love that Tammy had the courage to speak up,” one person wrote. “I also love Brian admitting fault and apologizing. No excuses given. This is the America I live in. 🙂 Bless you both.”

Tammy, too, responded. 

“Thank you, Brian for taking the time to apologize, it means a lot to me,” she wrote. “My dad, Pastor Red, was right about you changing and I can’t wait to call him and tell him about this.  I am sorry for my harsh words.”

Bosworth previously told CBN News that his father’s death sparked his search for meaning and purpose in life.

“I had my grandmother who was very faithful to the relationship with Jesus Christ,” he said. “You know, when you’re a little kid you don’t understand the impact of how that’s going to resonate for the rest of your life. All of my choices were keeping me from human love and from my father’s love. And the only way I’m going to fix that is if I decide to break the chains and get on my knees and finally say, ‘I can’t do this by myself and I can’t do it without you.’” 

Police in Uttar Pradesh, India, Most Harsh on Christians, Sources Say

HYDERABAD, India, January 6, 2019 (Morning Star News) – Police in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh state work in tandem with Hindu extremists to treat Christians and other religious minorities especially harshly, sources said.

“The UP police force is very different from the rest of India,” Dinanath Jaiswar, a volunteer with legal advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom-India, told Morning Star News. “They are very brash in their dealings with Muslim and Christian minorities, and there have been several cases of violence in police custody, but by God’s grace we have tried our best to reach them on time, and even while in the clutches of the enemy, God protects His people.”

From April 2017 to February 2018, India’s National Human Rights Commission registered 365 cases of judicial and custodial deaths in Uttar Pradesh, according to The Indian Express; the next highest amount was 127 cases in West Bengal state.

“It does not take long for a police officer here to lose his temper and thrash a person in custody,” Jaiswar said.

Most cases reported against police stations in several Uttar Pradesh districts fell under the categories of torture, infliction of injury and grievous hurt, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.

“It has become a trend that a batch of Hindu extremists barge inside Christian homes and accuse them of proselytizing Hindus to Christianity,” Jaiswar said. “When Christians deny the accusations and restrain them from disrupting the prayers, they use the police force to take Christians into custody.”

ADF-India personnel in Uttar Pradesh are often called to rush to police stations to try to intervene before any charges are filed, ensure that Christians are safe and work to release them as soon as possible, he added.

“UP’s legal aid team works like a Rapid Action Force,” Jaiswar said. “We aim at immediate release of pastors in custody. If police extend the custody over the night, the next morning they would file the FIR [First Information Report], and the victims will be presented before the judicial magistrate and will be sent to judicial custody.”

Obtaining bail is a lengthier process, but ADF’s Uttar Pradesh Legal Aid Cell strives to arrange for immediate release on personal bonds, he said.

Pastor Surendra Vanwasi of Jeevan Marg Trust was leading Sunday worship at a home church in Karubir village, Mau District on Nov. 17 when police arrived and took him into custody. The station house officer at Chirraiyakot Police Station “was rash and adamant,” Jaiswar said.

“Tens of requests were put before the higher ranked police officials, and only then the SHO agreed to release Pastor Vanwasi,” he said. “In the guise of enquiry police had detained him, but thankfully no charges were filed.”

A similar case of detention was reported in Mirzapur District on the same day. A church leader identified only as Pastor Khaiya from Mizoram state was invited to Uttar Pradesh to deliver a message to a congregation in Mirzapur. By noon, a mob of upper-caste Hindus and Hindu extremists had surrounded the venue, Jaiswar said.

“They slapped Pastor Khaiya and handed him to police,” he said. “When we reached Jamalpur police station, the local believers informed us that Pastor Khaiya was taken to police station like a criminal. It is a Naxalite [Maoist rebel]-belt area, and the police station in Jamalpur is specially equipped to torture Naxal suspects. The police had locked up Khaiya in an underground cell.”

The ADF team used social media and called higher officials in the district in attempts to win immediate release, he said.

“The situation turned tense as the upper-caste leaders and Hindu extremists insisted the police officers level serious allegations of forced religious conversions under stringent sections of the Indian Penal Code,” Jaiswar said. “By later that evening, the SHO had finally agreed to release Pastor Khaiya on personal bail. We were forced to give it in writing that he would not be involved in any conversion activity in future.”

YOUTH PASTORS JAILED

Youth pastors Om Prakash, 23, and Ajay Kumar, 20, were leading a worship service at the home of Kapildev Ram in Daraura village on Nov. 25 when the village president intruded into the house and ordered the Christians to stop, sources said.

“Ram’s sons did not allow the village president and his aides to attack the youth pastors,” the youth workers’ trainer, identified only as Pastor Ramjit, told Morning Star News. “They stood as defense and did not let the person touch the pastors. This made him angry, and he went and brought the police force with him and got the pastors and also Ram arrested.”

The youth ministry sends workers to 30 village house churches in four districts in Uttar Pradesh on weekdays. Leaders had sent Prakash and Kumar to Daraura village on Nov. 25, and the next day Ranipur police registered an FIR against them and Ram alleging promotion of enmity between religious groups, deliberately hurting religious sentiments, inducement by rendering an object of divine displeasure and other charges.

Lower court and District Sessions judges rejected their bail pleas. ADF-India’s attorneys have filed a bail petition in the High Court at Allahabad.

Ranipur Station House Officer Ashok Kumar Yadav noted in the Hindi-language case diary that neighbors were disturbed when the mob formed at Ram’s home.

“Our police team had reached it on time and urged them to disperse immediately,” Yadav wrote. “As our attempts to restore peace in the area had failed, we had to arrest the pastors to bring the situation under control.”

Pastor Ramjit said the youth pastors are facing mistreatment from heavy brutes in the district prison.

“When I visited them last week, they told me that under-trial prisoners in murder cases had put up fight and abused our boys in filthy language,” Pastor Ramji told Morning Star News. “They seem very frightened. Both their marriages have been set for summer, and their fiancées and families have been waiting for their release.”

‘YOU MAY ARREST ME’ 

When a mob of no fewer than 60 Hindu nationalists armed with hockey sticks stormed into a Christian’s home in Ghaziabad city, which straddles both Uttar Pradesh state and Delhi National Capital Region, and beat the homeowner and the pastor leading a Bible study, officers from Loni police station took both Christians into custody.

The assailants also vandalized the homeowner’s furniture, said Sanjay Mcgee of Indian Christian Assembly (Bharatiya Masih Mahasabha).

As it was late at night, Christians feared police would hold pastor Jagdish Marotiya and the homeowner overnight and charge them in the morning, Mcgee said. A Christian leader from the Delhi National Capital Region, Minakshi Singh, rushed to the police station and was there until midnight trying to persuade officers not to be misled by Hindu extremists.

“We had enough evidence of videos and photographs of the destruction the armed men had caused, and I was trying to reason with the officials as to why had not they taken any action against the assailants, and why the victims had been detained,” Singh told Morning Star News. “The argument went on for a very long time, and finally at midnight the police agreed release the Christians.”

In the area, called Bharat Nagar Society, about 25 Christian families refrained from putting stars outside their homes during Christmas season, terrified that they would be identified as Christians and targeted by Hindu fanatics, Mcgee said.

“When I visited the area on Dec. 3 after the attack on the home, there were security guards everywhere, and they stopped us from entering the colony,” he said. “I asked the guards where were they when a resident's house was vandalized two days before, but they denied the attack. An elderly female member of the home church there told us that police had threatened [the homeowner’s] family not to pursue a case against the assailants.”

Good Shepherd Church in the Trilokpuri area came under attack a week before. On the second day of a three-day convention the church had organized, Nov. 23, more than 100 members of the Hindu extremist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh surrounded the site chanting, “Go back! Go back!” Singh told Morning Star News.

Higher police officials from the Mayur Vihar station reached the venue and ordered that the gathering must cease in order to restore peace, she said.

“As soon as I received this information, I rushed to Trilokpuri and met the assistant commissioner of police and told him that it is our constitutional right to pray to our God,” she told Morning Star News. “But the police official told me that it is not possible to let you continue Christian prayers, saying, ‘Who will take responsibility if the situation turns hostile?’ I told him that I will take the responsibility, ‘You may arrest me, but the convention should go on.”’

After long discussions on Nov. 23 and Nov. 24, police allowed them to continue as long as they refrained from using the sound system, Singh said. More than 200 policemen were deployed, and barricades were installed on four sides of the church building, she said.

“A mob of at least 200 Hindu extremists showed up outside the church premises and were shouting to the top of their lungs, ‘Har Har Mahadev [Shiva is everywhere],” she said. “We told the police that our people would remain calm, and there will not be any problem from our side, and you please control the mob outside the premises.

“By God’s grace, the final day of the convention was a success. The police also had the chance to hear the gospel and joyfully joined us for the meal after the prayer service.”

India is ranked 10^th on Christian support organization Open Doors’ 2019 World Watch List of the countries where it is most difficult to be a Christian. The country was 31st in 2013, but its position has been worse each year since Narendra Modi of the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in 2014.

Chinese Pastor Sentenced to 9 Years in Prison for Preaching Gospel

A Chinese pastor on Monday was sentenced to nine years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power” and “illegal business operations,” although his only crime was to preach the gospel in an unregistered church, supporters say.

The sentencing of Pastor Wang Yi of Early Rain Covenant Church was only the latest example in China’s crackdown on unregistered churches. 

Churches within China must register either with the Three-Self Patriotic Movement (if they’re Protestant) or the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association. Because such congregations face extreme regulations, millions of Christians in the country worship at underground congregations.

Early Rain was not registered. Wang was arrested in 2018.

His attorney, Si Weijiang, told the Washington Post that the incitement charge “involves preaching and is an issue of speech, which has … inflicted no social harm.” The illegal business charge related to him printing Christian books,” Si said.

A court in Sichuan, which is in southwest China, handed down the sentence.

China Aid, which monitors religious freedom in the country, criticized China for the arrest and sentence. 

“This is a pure case of unjust religious persecution against a peaceful preacher of a Chinese reformed church,” ChinaAid founder and president Dr. Bob Fu said. “This grave sentence demonstrates Xi's regime is determined to be the enemy of universal values and religious freedom. We call upon the international community to stand up to the Chinese Communist Party and hold this evil regime accountable.”

The sentence, Fu said, is the “harshest persecution to a Chinese house church pastor in more than a decade.”

“We urge Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback to condemn and take immediate action against this barbaric act by the Communist Party regime,” Fu said.

Chinese churches have faced severe restrictions in recent months. Government officials have edited sermons, ordered the removal of crosses, and replaced Ten Commandments displays with portraits of Chinese leaders. Chinese law forbids the proselytization of minors. 

State Trooper Prays with Grieving Family during Traffic Stop

A routine traffic stop ended in prayer earlier this week when State Trooper Ross Bates heard that the couple had experienced a death in the family.

According to KHOU, Lanell James, a middle school teacher, was driving from Conroe to Dallas with her husband, Lamar to be with family after Lamar’s brother died unexpectedly. As they drove through a small town, Bates pulled them over for a non-speeding violation.

Bates asked where they were heading, and she told him about her brother-in-law’s passing.

“He said, ‘Oh, I’m sorry to hear that, do you know where he is?’” Lanell explained. “My husband answered, ‘Yes, at the morgue,’ and [Bates] responded, ‘No, he is now in his heavenly home.’”

His reaction caught the couple off-guard. When he returned with a warning, the state trooper asked if he could pray with Lanell and Lamar and then removed his hat and held their hands while he prayed.

“I have never had this happen before, but it was everything that we needed in that moment,” Lanell said. “Thank you so much, Trooper Bates, for praying with us. There’s just so much in the news with the negativity and the police killings and the racial tension—it’s a lot.”

The 16-year Texas DPS veteran was honored to pray with them. He sent a statement to KHOU, saying:

“I am humbled that my actions had a positive impact on their lives during this difficult time. As a State Trooper, I’ve met many people who have shared their stories with me. Often, I don’t hear about the impact I’ve had on them. I am truly humbled by the kind words of Mrs. James, and I will always be grateful that our brief interaction had a positive impact on their family.”

Bates recently became an ordained deacon at his church and keeps a Bible on top of his center console.

On 1.1.2019 New Year Day, We the soldiers of The Army of Jesus Chennai, took lots of the names of States to pray. I got Chhattisgarh. I don't dare to say I prayed much for this State. I just told Jesus. "I have a burden for this state because I have worked there in Kawardha School and it is from there you called me out. (I left the convent from Kawardha in 1997). Thank you for giving me this place. Please open the doors there."

In the month of February, when Sol. Satya invited me to conduct Rise up and Build programme, there I was very happy.

He said, "M.P. and Chhattisgarh are the places  still not opened for BFF. Sister, why don't you come along with us, to open a door in these States?" I agreed. We went there and conducted a few meetings. But no  door was opened for AOJ activities specifically.

 Reasons (today I understand,) were,

1. We approached Evangelists. "Jesus Calls" arranged a meeting there for us.
2. We approached pastors
3. We approached believers who were already members of various Churches.

Nothing of this brought good results. In the month of October, one brother Pratap who was working in Bhilai for an organization under a Pastor, attended BFF in Chennai. The Lord touched him. He was completely changed. He accepted the truths taught here. After that he went home and sent his wife and mother for BFF. They also accepted the truth.

He  asked me, "Can I start a BFF in Chhattisgarh" Will you come there?

I said, "Everybody who attend BFF is supposed to start a BFF. Sure, we will stand with you".

He replied. "This is my only desire. But It looks like a mountain for me. But the Lord would strengthen me."

After going from here,

First I should come out of my organization. The income they give is my only source for livelihood now.

I have to find a job for my livelihood.

I have to look for a house to stay.

Because I do not want to continue  in the house which my organization has  given  me.

When we prayed together, the Lord showed 2 months. 'Within 2 months He will fulfil all that, he said.

In November Sol. Pratap invited us for a BFF  which is scheduled for  the month of December in Bhilai (CG). I did not reply him thinking this will not be possible for him.  But he went on pestering me. Finally he suggested a date also. So I had to agree for that . 8-13, December.

By that time we already had  appointed a team for  BFFs in North India . They came forward to help him with volunteers, coordinators and teachers.  On 8th Dec,  7 soldiers from Mumbai and Goa  landed in Bhilai. But no students!

When I consulted Sol. Pratap, he said, ' 20 people were supposed to  come. But nobody turned up. Don't know the reason. Anyway we will wait till tomorrow morning. Please  do not cancel the programme."

In fact we 2 sisters have also booked our tickets from Chennai to Bhilai on 10th (Raipur)  by flight.  I felt so guilty  of wasting  money . I was in a dilemma. My sleep was disturbed. I checked my diary to find that whether I prayed or not before taking a decision and the Lord gave the answers. Again I spent with the Lord  2 hours, in the night. The Lord gave a beautiful passage. Isaiah 49:8-13

I got confidence and was strengthened.

Early morning, the Lord showed a person in the State of  Maharashtra. I told him the situation.  He asked me to wait for a little while.

After that two good news came.

1. 2 People have come for BFF. But they are very old. In their 70s. The lady is paralytic. Can't walk at all.

2. The brother from Maharashtra told me "Please go there; there is so much of need". He called a particular sister whom he knew in Bhilai. She asked him to draft an invitation for the 5 days meeting and our availability there for counseling etc.

Since the Lord asked us to go ahead with  the trip, we started from Chennai. In between satan was sowing the weeds of unbelief in me. I brushed it aside. I went on confessing,

"We will go there. We will experience 100% of victory in the name of Jesus."

The teachers said, "Two students came. First day they were sleeping almost in every class. They were non Christians. First day a miracle happened. The paralytic lady stood up from her chair by herself . The Lord did a miracle. Second day, She started walking with a support.  3rd day she walked by herself. For both of them, this was the greatest message the Lord preached. Their eyes were opened. They started asking doubts in the class. They both accepted  Jesus as the true God. They wanted to take baptism. 5th day, Baptism was given. They understood the truths of The Bible and committed their lives to God. He is an advocate. He said, "If somebody treated me, I would take revenge 10 times. This teaching of forgiveness is  new to me. I will follow this". His face, talks everything changed.

The Maharashtra brother made an announcement in the whatsapp and people started coming for counseling. Not even a single minute was wasted.

At the end of BFF, they proclaimed,

'This looks like a heaven. For the sake of two of us, how many of you travelled from  various parts of India. This shows your love for us. Jesus Christ has taught you so.

We both want to become teachers for the next  BFF." We will bring students too. 

Last day there were more than 20 members for the anointing.

Nobody can predict  how the Lord  moves and operates.

As the Lord had promised, He gave Sol. Smith a house, a job, a vehicle,  all within 2 months. He is all excited to do the work of God . Thank you Jesus.

The next BFF is announced for Dec 25-30th 2019.

The End-Time Fire-Pot as We Approach 2020 

I've been hesitant to write a prophecy update lately because things are happening at such a rapid pace that it is difficult to keep up with everything happening. Yet, this is exactly what Jesus said would happen at the time of the end. He said over and over again that he would come at a time when the signs were occurring in rapid fire.

He used the Greek word tachu (think tachometer) and various forms of the term. He wasn't saying he was coming "soon" as some translations render it, but that he was coming "swiftly" at a time with things were revved up-at the top end of the end-time tachometer, so to speak. We seem to be there now. I suppose things could rev up even more-but at some point, the tachometer is going to redline. 

Jesus also referred to these as birth pains. Most prophecy experts agree that the birth pains began with the rebirth of Israel and have steadily increased since that all-important prophetic event. At some point the baby must be born. Things are truly happening at breakneck speed-right now.

Snapshot of the Current Perplexity and Lawlessness

In the Olivet Discourse Jesus said the nations would have perplexing problems in the last days-problems they didn't even know how to fix. In the context of the aforementioned birth pains, he also taught that these (and other signs) would increase in frequency and intensity the closer we got to his return.  In addition to Jesus's teaching about the last days, Paul taught (in 2 Timothy 3) that there would be terrible (dangerous, violently brutal) times in the last days characterized by selfishness, greed, pride, lawlessness, slander, immorality, and "spirituality" but not godliness.

Because of the wall-to-wall coverage of the ongoing KGB-like political coup taking place in Washington, most Americans don't even realize the incredible rise of division and social uprising around the world. In addition to the deepening division occurring right now in America (with the impeachment), in Israel (heading toward an unprecedented 3rd election, and with the official charges leveled on Netanyahu), in Great Britain (with the ongoing Brexit break-up perplexities), here is a snapshot of actual, ongoing, often-violent, and widespread civil uprisings around the globe:

France, Hong Kong, Iran (where the internet was shut down and over 100 protesters were killed in 21 cities), Turkey, Venezuela, Lebanon, Chile, Spain, Haiti, Iraq, Sudan, Russia, Egypt, Uganda, Indonesia, Ukraine, Peru, Zimbabwe, Columbia, the Netherlands, Ethiopia, Brazil, Algeria, Ecuador, and other places.

Circling back to the division in America-it truly seems our country is too far gone. I'm an optimist by nature, but as I study scripture and survey the landscape and recent history of our country, I don't see how it can be healed. Scripture tells us that a nation divided cannot stand. It is a spiritual law, so to speak.I do believe, however, that God is delaying this supernova explosion until the rapture has occurred.

The rapture will likely be the trigger that causes the concussive collapse. All systems are poised for this future trigger event. Such a collapse would have global repercussions that would perfectly set the stage for the rise of the Antichrist and the ensuing events of Revelation.

I believe Jesus taught in the Olivet Discourse (through his mention of the end times being like the days of Noah) that the world would be characterized by lawlessness, violence, widespread immorality, and business-as-usual commerce-right up to the moment the end-time ark closes (i.e. The rapture). Right now we're on all systems go-and I believe it will stay that way (and worsen) as time goes on.

The End-Time Fire-Pot

Zechariah 12 says Israel will be like a "firepot in a woodpile" in the last days. Even though this tiny country could fit into Lake Michigan (with room to spare) and merely wants to exist in peace-hundreds of rockets can be fired into her civilian areas without any real condemnation from the UN, EU, or any major country except the US. Last week Israel was attacked daily (and rightfully defended herself) as rockets were fired into civilian areas-and this barely made the news in America.

Then we have the matter of Iran's proxies and specialized Quds Force preparing daily (and openly stating this fact) for a near-future attack on Israel. By the way, did you realize that Quds means Jerusalem? In other words, Iran has a specialized elite unit within their Revolutionary Guards that literally means Jerusalem Force. Let that sink in. End-Time Bible prophecy centers on the tightening concentric circles of Israel, Jerusalem, and the Temple Mount.

As a matter of fact, we discover that every Old Testament prophet (except Jonah) predicted that Israel would become a nation again after a long period of worldwide dispersion (and mistreatment) of the Jewish people. For example, Ezekiel 36-39 very clearly predicted the detailed chronological milestones that we have witnessed in modern history-much of it in just the past couple of years. These milestones include:

• The scattered bones of a nearly annihilated Jewish race (Ezekiel 36/WWII)
• Being brought back to their homeland again
• Leading to the rebirth of their ancient nation
• Followed by the threat of an unlikely alliance of 3 nations
• These ancient nations cited being modern-day Russia, Turkey, and Iran
• Having other nations in tow (Sudan, Libya, etc.)
• With the storm forming from Israel's northern border
• But without the involvement of Syria (a traditional/consistent Biblical enemy of Israel)
• And with Russia being the main "guard" of the other nations involved
• For the purpose of taking valuable resources from Israel at the opportune time

The stage for this near-future attack is being set before our eyes-in real time. Prophecy is leaping off the page onto our newsfeed. These prophecies of Scripture could not more clearly be coming to pass than they are right now-except for the moment when this future attack begins and God intervenes. 

Even the US pull-out from northern Syria lines up with this prophecy. It's as if someone were reading Ezekiel 38 like a movie script and directing the players how to act!

Some Encouraging Marching Orders

I want to end this weighty article on a positive and encouraging note. Aside from the fact that God is in control and we win in the end-we can be encouraged as people who are watching the end-time signs in a few other ways. As a prophecy student and end-time watchman myself, I've had to wrestle with the tension between the worsening conditions of the world and the blessed hope event horizon we call the rapture. Here are a few conclusions I've come to in terms of how to navigate through these turbulent waters with our hope and joy still intact. 

I pray that these are an encouragement to others who have eyes to see the prophetic events taking place before our eyes, as so many seem to be asleep to these amazingly prophetic events. The foundation to all of these is trust.

1.) Don't second-guess your calling. 

Tether your obedience to a specific moment in time when you know God called you.

2.) Stay in your lane. 

Focus on what you are called to impact, not on the 1,000+ other things you can't control.

3.) Look up! 

Fix your attention on eternal things. Trust that God is in control.

4.) Obey, one step at a time. 

God knows exactly where he needs to position you on the end-time battlefield. When events are coming fast and furious, we must seek the Lord and obey one single step at a time. This is less overwhelming.

5.) Embrace the season. 

We are in the end-times. Embrace this fact and understand its implications.

6.) Fellowship with like-minded believers. 

Intentionally seek out other watchers-even if you have to fellowship from afar. Technology can help.

7.) Bloom where you are planted. 

Prayerfully consider how to be a blessing to your church-even if many don't recognize the relevance, importance, or urgency of the signs that you see. Perhaps the Lord is positioning you as a "go-to" source whom other believers can call on at the right time. 

As conditions worsen, perhaps more believers will see what you see-or at least be more curious about them. You'll be uniquely positioned to answer their questions. Be patient and loving in the meantime.

How the Christianity Today Op-Ed Is Dividing Christians

Timothy Dalrymple, CEO of Christianity Today, recently defended Mark Galli’s op-ed supporting the impeachment of President Trump. He stated, “We have received countless notes of encouragement from readers who were profoundly moved. They no longer feel alone. They have hope again.” 

Dalrymple goes on to say, “We feel compelled to say that the alliance of American evangelicalism with this presidency has wrought enormous damage to Christian witness.” He adds, “The problem is that we as evangelicals are also associated with President Trump’s rampant immorality, greed, and corruption; his divisiveness and race-baiting; his cruelty and hostility to immigrants and refugees; and more.” Much of that is untrue, but I digress. 

What Timothy and many others fail to realize is that we can’t have it both ways. We can’t have our cake and eat it too. There is not a middle ground for Christians today. You can either choose a president who will wear a Planned Parenthood scarf at her inauguration (or one of the countless others who would seek to destroy the America we know, and lead us down the primrose path of socialism — or worse), or you can back President Trump. As the saying goes: “You can vote your way into socialism and communism, but you’ll have to shoot your way out.” No, I’m not advocating violence, I’m advocating calling a spade a spade. 

CT, where was your voice when a newly elected congresswoman tweeted “Impeach the (expletive)!” about our president? Where is your voice when the national media lies and deceives the American public every day? To many, your op-ed seemed like a targeted hit piece. The Drudge Report even reported that evangelicals are in a battle because of your article. Talk about damaging our witness. Actually, Bible-believing, God-fearing Christians are united, not divided. 

First, Christians only seem to be divided because many claiming to be “Christians” are not genuinely saved, or they have a wrong view of government. As a result, their perception of truth is skewed, hence the divide. They are led by Hollywood, not the Holy Spirit. Ironically, Hollywood, liberals, and progressives also liked Mark Galli’s op-ed. If Hollywood and the national media are on your side, there’s a problem.

Secondly, many are divided on the “role” of government. The institution of government was created by God to govern man—to protect and defend and to administer justice. Our president is not a pastor who must exhibit godly character traits to stay in office; he is to be a terror to those who do evil (cf. Romans 13). 

I like Eric Metaxas’ analogy of an airline pilot. When I get on a plane, I’m not too concerned about the pilot’s past morality or tweeting history.I want to know if he can fly the plane and get my family home safely. The alliance of American evangelicalism with this presidency is no different than my alliance with the pilot to do his job. We both must succeed, or we both fail. 

In regard to Dalrymple’s response that our allegiance with Trump has “wrought enormous damage to that Christian witness,” this may be a good time to remind the reader that the world will hate those who hold to absolute truth. No matter what we do, the world will hate us unless we compromise the truth. We are not voting for people based on their character (although that would be a huge plus), we are voting for the future direction of America. What direction will those running for office take us? is the question we all should be asking. 

Many evangelicals have spoken out against the abrasive comments and cynical tweets of our president, but when we weigh those on the scale with candidates who vote to murder babies by removing them from the womb limb by limb, there is no comparison … no compromise … no negotiation. You may want to commit this paragraph to memory before 2020.

CT is so concerned about offending readers, but I wonder if they have stopped to consider that they may have offended God? 

Supreme Court to Decide How Far Religious Freedom Protections Extend for Parochial Schools

The U.S. Supreme Court will decide how far religious freedom protections extend in parochial classrooms after agreeing on Wednesday to hear the cases of two California teachers who claim their firings were discriminatory. In both instances, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit sided with the teachers.

Attorneys with Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which is representing the two Catholic elementary campuses, said the appeals court decision is tantamount to giving the government control over who provides religious instruction in parochial schools, which are constitutionally entitled to “choose ministers that embody their faith without government interference.”

Both schools argue that since a significant part of their classroom duties dealt with religious instruction, the teachers are “ministerial” employees as covered by Supreme Court precedent, and thus exempt from laws that extend to other employees, according to an article in USA Today.

“Parents trust Catholic schools to assist them in one of their most important duties: forming the faith of their children,” Montserrat Alvarado, vice president and executive director for Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, said in a news release. “If courts can second-guess a Catholic school’s judgment about who should teach religious beliefs to fifth graders, then neither Catholics nor any other religious group can be confident in their ability to convey the faith to the next generation.”

Becket is representing St. James School in Torrance and Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Hermosa Beach, both in Los Angeles County. In both instances, the schools assert the teachers were terminated due to lackluster job performance. Because of the similarity of the lawsuits, the High Court will consider the cases together. Oral arguments are expected in the spring.

Courthouse News reported that St. James opted not to renew the contract of fifth-grade teacher Kristen Biel for the 2014 school year, citing poor classroom management. Biel, who passed away earlier this year, said the school fired her only after learning she had breast cancer and needed time off for treatment in violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act. Her husband is continuing with the suit.

The following year, Our Lady of Guadalupe School decided not to rehire Agnes Morrissey-Berru, a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher. The school said lower enrollment and changing expectations from parents played a role in their decision. Morrissey-Berru alleges, though, the termination was the result of age discrimination.

Central to the case is the concept of a “ministerial” exception, which Becket describes as a First Amendment “right that allows religious schools to choose their own religion teachers.”

In 2012, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the “ministerial” exception for a Michigan church, which Becket also represented. The court essentially ruled in Hosanna-Tabor that religious groups should be free from government interference when they choose their leaders.

“The ministerial exception protects all religious groups’ freedom to choose “ministerial” employees without interference from bureaucrats or courts,” this week’s Becket statement read. “Most courts have ruled that ministerial employees are those employees who perform important religious functions, like instructing young children in the precepts of the Catholic faith. But in both Our Lady of Guadalupe School and St. James School, the 9th Circuit rejected this widely accepted rule.”

Becket argued that both teachers holistically integrated religion into all aspects of their instruction.

“Agnes Morrissey-Berru and Kristen Biel played crucial roles in teaching the Catholic faith to their fifth-grade students,” the statement read. “Both taught a religion class, integrated Catholic values into every subject they taught, joined their students in daily prayer, and accompanied students to Mass and other religious services.”

The ramifications of the 9th Circuit ruling, the schools’ attorneys said, would be widespread.

“Do we really want judges, juries, or bureaucrats deciding who ought to teach Catholicism at a parish school, or Judaism at a Jewish day school? Of course not,” said Eric Rassbach, vice president and senior counsel at Becket. “Religion teachers play a vital role in the ecosystem of faith. We are confident that the Supreme Court will recognize that under our Constitution government officials cannot control who teaches kids what to believe.”

The appeals court decided, however, that neither teacher fit the qualifications as envisioned in the precedent-setting case since they also taught secular topics.

The two cases to be heard by the Supreme Court are Our Lady of Guadalupe School v. Morrissey-Berru and in St. James Catholic School v. Biel.
