Jesus as Host: Hospitality in the Ministry of Jesus

Jesus in the Bible is portrayed as a guest in certain instances but at the same time, he was a host too. He was a guest at Lazarus’ house, Simeon’s house, Zaccheus’s house, at the wedding place at Cana, etc. Jesus seldom hosted others since he had no house of his own, while he was living on this earth. But those who read the Bible carefully can understand the compassionate heart of Jesus which prompted him to do many miracles associated with hospitality when there was a need. Anyway, Jesus has extended a cordial invitation to all His children to His own heavenly house.

Rev 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come! And let the one hearing say, Come! And let the one who is thirsty come. And he willing, let him take of the Water of Life freely.

It is clear from the many banquets and feasting parables Jesus said that he valued hospitality as an important part of his life. At various times, Jesus assumes the role of host and guest and sometimes mixes them up. I particularly like the times when he turns the etiquette of hospitality on its head as he did when he invited himself to the house of Zacchaeus and turns his outcast host into a part of the gospel story. Luke 19:1-10

And it seems that his idea of a good time was somewhat disturbing to the religious leaders who condemned him for eating and drinking with publicans and sinners. Mark 2:16; Matthew 11:19

John begins his gospel with a story of Jesus’ own hospitality. Jesus the host in action. John 1:35-42

Two disciples of John see Jesus walking along the street, minding his own business, and curious, they trail him, discreetly, they think, but they are unwittingly giving new meaning to the term, “followers of Christ.” Jesus turns around and sees them. “What do you want?” he asks. It is a profound question. It goes beyond the immediate issue of “why are you following me?” to the heart of who they are. What are you looking for? What do you need? What are you lacking in your life? That is the hardest thing in the world to know. What these disciples want most is to see more of Jesus. “Where are you staying?” they ask, a rather awkward question to ask a stranger who has caught you following him. That question could have been answered with a house number, but Jesus sees the deeper nature of the question and responds, “Come and see.”

I would like to hear him say that — to hear his tone of voice, to see his body language. How did he make the invitation inviting? He must have overcome the disciples’ embarrassment and put them at ease. He sees through the surface meaning of the question to its deeper meaning and speaks to their hearts. “Who are you really? And to respond to their question, he shows them who he really is. Our homes provide the setting for our lives, the place where we are our most private and truest selves, the place where we invite others to share our lives with us. When something “hits home” or “hits us where we live,” it touches our deepest selves. Jesus was inviting these two budding disciples to come and see him as he is, to experience him as he is. We don’t talk about hospitality; we experience it. Not, “Come and I will explain it to you.” Not “come and learn,” but “come and see, come and experience me for yourselves.” “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.” Psalms 34:7

And they came, and saw, and stayed the whole day.

Clearly, Jesus is not carrying a day planner. He is certainly on his way somewhere when the disciples spot him, on an errand of some kind, but all that is forgotten. He does a complete about-face just to see them. Whatever business was on his mind is now forgotten. Now his business is the two inquiring disciples. They aren’t interrupting his work; they are his work. Come home with me, now, and spend the day. The Messiah doesn’t have another thing to do.

We wonder what Jesus and the two disciples talked about that day. We can imagine Jesus was a good host. He clearly appreciates a good table. Remember this is the man who will prepare dinner for 5,000. The good host, in asking his guests what they want, is issuing an invitation to acknowledge their needs so he can meet their needs, with no place for polite reticence, and no social pretense. Jesus can see right through that. Wherever the conversation went, it went directly to the hearts of the two disciples, and of Jesus, too. If they talked about the expected Messiah, Jesus must have talked about the work set before him. Imagine the reaction of the two disciples as they come to realize that the Messiah, they had heard about all their lives is not an abstract concept but the man sitting and talking with them. Their whole understanding changes. They approached him as Rabbi, a teacher, someone who could explain deep matters of theology to them. But they found a Messiah, someone who could change them into the image of God. And it transforms them. The disciples leave the house as apostles, telling others, “We have found the Messiah.”

If the image of hospitality suffers with pictures of tea parties with just the right people making just the right impression, wearing just the right clothes eating just the right foods, and saying just the right things, confined to bland small talk, lest anyone be disturbed, the example of Jesus turns all that on its head.

Hospitality is a way of being in the world. It happens in our homes and at our tables. It happens in our offices and classrooms, and whenever we meet another on the sidewalk. Hospitality provides a safe place where others can be at home, a place where it is safe to be yourself, say what you think, ask the questions you have, and engage in the respectful exchange of differing views. Jesus invited the strangers into his home and made them disciples. As followers of Jesus, we welcome the strangers and make them friends.

We are to listen to others with the humility that knows others have something to give us, and we have much to learn by hearing their stories. Hospitality supports a community where we can be at peace with ourselves, with others, and with God. Though hospitality can be offered by institutions, it is most often experienced by one person being heard and understood by another.

It is something we can carry with us wherever we go. The best party in town is the one you are at, with whoever happens to be with you, at any given time. It is God who has called you and put you there.

The shadow Parli Secretary, along with the usual routine works will also conduct a training program to empower, educate, and update the SMP SMLAs.

What is hospitality?

Hospitality can be defined as “the quality or disposition of receiving and treating guests and strangers in a warm, friendly, generous way.” In the New Testament, the Greek word translated “hospitality” literally means “love of strangers.” Hospitality is a virtue that is both commanded and commended throughout Scripture. In the Old Testament, it was specifically commanded by God: “When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt” (Leviticus 19:33-34, emphasis added).

During His public ministry, Jesus and His disciples depended entirely on the hospitality of others as they ministered from town to town (Matthew 10:9-10). Likewise, the early Christians also depended on and received hospitality from others (Acts 2:44-45; 28:7). In fact, travellers in ancient times depended heavily on the hospitality of strangers as traveling could be dangerous and there were very few inns, and poor Christians could not afford to stay at them, anyway. This generous provision to strangers also included opening one’s home for church services.

Hospitality was indeed a highly regarded virtue in ancient times, especially for Christian leaders (Titus 1:8; 1 Timothy 3:2).

The writer of Hebrews reminds us not to forget to “entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it” (Hebrews 13:2). Indeed, in the book of Genesis we read of Abraham’s humble and generous display of hospitality to three strangers.

Wealthy and aged, Abraham could have called on one of his many servants to tend to the three unannounced visitors. Yet the hospitable and righteous Abraham generously gave them the best he had. And, as it turned out, he had entertained the Lord and two angels (Genesis 18:1-8).

Christians are “God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works” (Ephesians 2:10).

As followers of Christ, we emulate His love and compassion when we show hospitality, not only to fellow Christians but even more so to strangers and the less fortunate. We honor God when we are kind to the needy (Proverbs 14:31; 19:17). As Jesus said, “When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed” (Luke 14:13).

Christ also taught us the second greatest commandment, to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39), and the Parable of the Good Samaritan teaches us that “neighbor” has nothing to do with geography, citizenship, or race. Wherever and whenever people need us, there we can be neighbors and, like Christ, show mercy. This is the essence of hospitality.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus discusses the hospitable behavior of those who will inherit the kingdom: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me” (Matthew 25:34-36). These days we often don’t think much about entertaining strangers, but hospitality is still an important part of Christian ministry (Romans 12:13; 1 Peter 4:9). By serving others we serve Christ (Matthew 25:40) and we promote the spread of God’s truth (3 John 5-8).

India Saw Extreme Weather Events Almost Daily In First 9 Months This Year: Report

It said lightning and storms were the most common disasters, occurring on 176 out of 273 days and claiming 711 lives. Most of these deaths occurred in Bihar. However, the most significant devastation came from heavy rains, floods, and landslides, causing over 1,900 casualties.

New Delhi: India experienced extreme weather events almost every day in the first nine months of this year which led to nearly 3,000 deaths, according to a report released today.

Published by the independent think tank Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), the report said the climate-vulnerable country had extreme weather on 86 per cent of days from January to September 2023.

The CSE said 2,923 people died, almost two million hectares of crops were ruined, 80,000 homes were destroyed and more than 92,000 animals were killed. But these numbers might be even higher because not all the data is collected, it said.

"'India 2023: An assessment of extreme weather events' attempts to build an evidence base on the frequency and expanding geography of extreme weather events in the country. As this assessment clearly shows, what the country has witnessed so far in 2023 is the new 'abnormal' in a warming world," said the CSE director general Sunita Narain.

Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of extreme weather events at 138. However, the largest number of deaths occurred in Bihar (642), followed by Himachal Pradesh (365) and Uttar Pradesh (341).

Punjab recorded the highest number of animal deaths while Himachal Pradesh reported the most damaged houses due to extreme weather events.

In the southern region, Kerala saw the highest count of extreme weather days (67) and deaths (60). Telangana suffered maximum effect on crop area (over 62,000 hectares). The state also witnessed high animal casualties (645). Karnataka faced severe destruction, with over 11,000 houses demolished.

In northwest India, Uttar Pradesh had the most extreme weather days at 113. Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan were also significantly affected.

In the eastern and northeastern regions, Assam registered maximum extreme weather events (102), with the state losing 159 livestock and over 48,000 hectares of crops devastated. Nagaland saw over 1,900 houses destroyed.

The CSE said January was slightly warmer than average, while February broke records, becoming the warmest in 122 years. India had its sixth driest February and the driest August in 122 years.

According to research conducted by a different think tank, more than 80 per cent of Indians live in districts vulnerable to climate risks.

Therefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Hebrews 12:1 (UKJV)

Due to jetlag, I woke up at 12:05 early morning in Niagara. I was reading my daily meditation. The Lord gave certain insights about the above verse.

The above verse clearly tells the reason why many people are not able to run the race of their destiny in faith or not able to progress in it in faith. There are two reasons.

They don't lay aside the weights.
They don't lay aside the sin which does so easily beset us.

Our hearts should be free and light 24X 7 hours so that running in faith becomes easier for us.

There can be weights that entangle our race of faith, which have to be laid aside. Luke 21:34 gives us a clue about these weights. Our hearts can be overcharged with three things.

Worldly excess
Drunkenness

Cares for this life.

I am writing this from a hotel in Niagara, USA. Coming from the most populated country, with 142 crores of people, (more than four times the population of the USA with one-third of the land) I can see the excess in this country. USA's per capita income in 2013 is estimated as US dollars 80412.00 whereas that of India is US dollars 2612.45.

Among worldly excess worldly riches and wealth stand first. Along with material riches, a series of other things creep in. For eg, my sister who has been settled in the USA for 22 years was telling me, "Both my son and daughter have decided not to send their children to schools. They are giving home schooling."

When I asked the reason, she told me about certain new trends that are spreading in the USA.

"Children cannot be addressed boy or girl. They have to be addressed in neutral gender (it, that, etc) because it is considered an offense to call them so. "She" can become "He" at any time. Any child can go for gender change operation without the consent of parents.

"Worldly Excess" can lead societies into such foolishness. That is why the Lord cautioned the (worldly) rich people in the following words. Matthew 13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that hears the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.

Mark 10:23 (UKJV) And Jesus looked round about, and says unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

The rich here refer to one who trusts in his riches.

Mark 10:24 ...... But Jesus answers again, and says unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

Laying aside sin that easily beset us.

Laying aside sin in a society which has no sense of sin, is swimming against the current. It needs excess energy and extra grace. Lot had obtained this grace and hence he survived.

2 Peter 2:7-9 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:

For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;

The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

It is up to the Lord to deliver the godly out of temptations.

When one makes up their mind to lay aside sin the Lord marks such godly people to take up certain Kingdom tasks.

When Daniel decided in his heart to abstain from certain things, he was given the gift of interpreting dreams.

Let there be many in our generation who abstain from sin and lay aside the weights of their hearts so that they can run the race which is set before them!

While I was there in the month of June, I had swelling in both legs and shortness of breath so I couldn’t walk. I was overweight and I thought that because of my “varicose” issue, I had been pulled into this problem. I used to pray a lot and have my medication. By God's grace, I arrived in Trichy on the 7th of July. I went to see a vascular surgeon as I had pain and swelling in my legs. He told me that I have a heart pumping of 40/. Fluid has accumulated in the lungs which could lead to heart failure and he told us to immediately be admitted to the ICU. Nearly for 3 days, I was treated in the ward. Many were praying for me. When Sr. Anita was praying for me, God gave her a word “Ezekiel 36:26”. Accordingly, I believe that the Lord has done wonderful things in my life and given me a new heart according to the scriptures. The angiogram reports were clear and it stated that there are no blockages. I thank all those who prayed for me in Jesus's name. To God be the glory. Amen!

A testimony from Immanuel Troop Church. One of the soldier’s father had a problem in his eyes for 3 years. He and his sister prayed for their father's cataract surgery but it could not happen due to squint eyes. This time his sister prayed for it and she took her father to the hospital. The first doctor who they consulted said it could not be done. After consulting 3 other doctors, the chief doctor told them that they could proceed with the surgery. The operation started at 10:00 AM and was completed at 11:30 AM by the grace of the heavenly Father. The operation was successful. Their father’s name is Manoharan and he was 70 years. He had no complications found after the surgery. His vision now turns to normal. Thank you, Jesus!

We started the 46th batch of ECC on 18.9.2023 with 6 candidates. They follow and are instructed about the daily schedule of morning and night prayers, discipline, dress code, skills, exams, troop church, and class schedules. In ECC they learn nearly 80 classes by lessons and also by visual methods etc. They participate in library work and debates, drawings, etc. They get individual and family counseling from counselors and also get spiritual prayer support from AOJ staff and sisters. In the end, Talents Day was planned and conducted with the guidance of the coordinator. Chief guests welcome and facilitate with gifts, and distribute certificates to ECC candidates by chief guest. The chief guest delivers a biblical and motivational speech to all. The program ends with a closing prayer and pledge.

Support for Cutting Trade, Oil Ties With Israel Growing Among Arab-Islamic Nations

Over 70 countries attending the ‘Joint Arab-Islamic Extraordinary Summit’ in Riyadh on Saturday backed the idea of cutting economies ties with Israel and imposing an “oil embargo” on the Jewish state over Tel Aviv’s refusal to heed international calls to implement a ceasefire.

Leaders and delegations representing nearly 79 nations from Arab League and the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation convened in Riyadh for the meeting called in view of the worsening humanitarian situation and a rising death toll in Gaza.

The Summit was chaired by Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman and was attended by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan among others, according to a statement by OIC.

A joint communique after the joint meeting, as reported by media, called for “binding” resolution by the United Nations (UN) Security Council to bring an end to IDF’s campaign in Gaza.

The unanimously adopted joint communique also called for an immediate ceasefire as it condemned Israel’s “war crimes” in the Palestinian territory.

The Islamic and Arab nations refused to characterise Israel’s bombing campaign in Gaza as “self-defence”, putting them at odds with the US and most of the western allies.

However, reports suggest that a plan to implement an economic boycott on Israel or impose an “oil embargo” couldn’t be adopted due to reservations expressed by four of the 22 Arab League nations—Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt and Jordan.

The four countries also reportedly didn’t back the idea of preventing the use of American military bases in the Middle-East to support Israel.

Continuation from previous issue...

First came a feeling of self importance. The elder brother was out in a field doing what he ought to do, but he got mad when the party began at home. He didn’t get mad because he didn’t like parties. I know he liked parties because he claimed to his father that he would never let him throw one! That was followed by a feeling of self pity. (Lk 15:29-30)

Often we over look the true meaning of the story of the prodigal son. We forget that we have not one but two prodigals. The younger brother is guilty of rebelliousness, while the older brother is guilty of a religious self righteousness. Both these are wrong attitudes.

In Philippians 2:3-8, Paul talks about the attitudes we should possess as Christians.

Paul tells us 5 things about the proper Christian attitude.

Do things for the right reasons (verse 3)

Regard others as more important than yourself (verse 3)

Look out for the interests of others (verse 4)

Christ recognized His Sonship and therefore was willing to serve God and others. Possess the attitude of Christ who was not power hungry but rather emptied Himself, demonstrated obedience and fulfilled God’s purpose. When our emphasis of lifestyle is focused on verse 4, looking out for own personal interests, we become like the elder brother. We nurture attitudes of jealousy, pity and selfishness. Christians who possess no greater cause than themselves are not as happy as those who do not know Christ as Saviour, yet have a purpose greater than themselves. This “elder brother” attitude has three possible results, none of which is positive.

First, the elder brother outwardly was correct, conscientious, industrious and dutiful at his attitude. His wrong relationship with his brother brought a strained relationship with the Father (Lk. 15:28)

Second it is possible to be an heir of all our Father possesses yet have less joy and liberty than one who possesses nothing.

The servants were happier than the elder son. They ate, laughed and danced while he stood on the outside demanding his rights. A wrong attitude kept the elder brother away from the heart’s desire of the father, the love of his brother and the joy of the servants. Wrong attitudes in our lives will block the blessings of God and cause us to live below God’s potential for our lives.

When our attitude begins to erode like the elder brother’s, we should remember two things.

Our privilege “My child, you have always been with me” (Lk. 15:31)

Our possessions “All that is mine is yours”. (Lk. 15:31)

HOW DOES ATTITUDE DEVELOP

Thought -> Meditated thought ->Decision -> Action - > Attitude -> Habit -> Continued attitude.

Bad attitudes

Bad thoughts -> Negative Meditation -> wrong decisions -> bad habits, Continuous action -> Wrong actions -> Bad attitudes.

Good attitudes

Right thoughts –> Positive Meditation -> Right Decisions -> Right Habits -> Continued Action -> Right Actions -> Good attitudes.

2 Timothy 4:19

This is what Paul writes to Timothy.The names “Aquila and Priscilla” are mentioned six times in Scripture. Aquila and Priscilla three times, and three times in reverse, equaling both. Both were Paul's supporters in his ministry.When Paul went to Corinth, he met Aquila, a Gentile Jew who had just arrived in Italy with his wife because the emperor Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome.

Paul stayed and worked with them because they also made tents and earned their living.The results were that Paul preached in the synagogue every Sabbath and taught both Jews and Greeks.

When Silas and Timothy came, Paul, zealous in spirit, convinced the Jews that Jesus was the Christ. When he was opposed, he decided to go to the Gentiles (Acts 18:1-6). Paul took leave of the brothers there and set sail for Syria.

Priscilla and Aquilla went with him. When they reached Ephesus, he left them there.

Priscilla and Aquilla joined Apollo, a Jew born in Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was already in the Lord, knowing only the baptism given by John, and being in the presence of the Holy spirit.He had the thrist to proclaim the Gospel to everyone.When he boldly spoke the truth about Jesus in the synagogue with great enthusiasm, Aquila and Priscilla heard him speak,they joined him and started explaining him about the word of God more clearly.

Then when he was about to go to Achaia, the brothers wrote to the believing disciples there to receive him. After he arrived there, he openly argued strongly with the Jews and convinced them with the scriptures that Jesus was the Christ. By grace he was very helpful to the believers. (Acts 18:24-28)

Again, Paul visited Ephesus.Paul met some of the disciples here and asked if they had received the Holy Spirit when they became believers. They didn't know it.John told the people that they should be believers in Christ Jesus who is coming after him, and he gave baptism suitable for repentance. When they heard it, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them. Thus, the Ephesian church flourished.

When Paul sends greetings from Rome (Romans 16:3-4) thus,

Paul says:Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus. They have given their necks for my soul.I am thankful to them,not only me but of all the congregation of the Gentiles.

Paul sends greetings to the churches in Corinth

(1Cor 16:14-19)

Paul says, 'The church in Asia greets you. Aquila and Priscilla were conducting troop prayer with the people in their house, greet you very much in the Lord."

Another good family we see in the apostolic activity is the family of Cornelius who worshiped the Lord, helped the poor Jewish people and prayed to God constantly.

Prayer:

If all Christian families served the Lord like the family of Aquila and Priscilla, wouldn't the church grow! Amen. Hallelujah!

A candidate came with a history of alcohol dependence syndrome for past 15 years.Complaints of aggressiveness, damage household objects, irresponsible in family responsibilities. After he came to ECC he learnt about Jesus Christ and through the word of God he learnt how we need to love our family and to fulfill our responsibilities.All the classes were useful for him, he thanked Jesus Christ and everyone in the centre.Amen.

A prophecy for the future of India

India is full of knowledge to know God!

May people receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit to end poverty!

May our dear sisters be filled with supreme power as India comes out of ignorance!

Let's pray for two hours for the rise of India and the problems will be solved by itself. Many will repent.That India becomes a clean country with more yield in agriculture to support orphaned children.

Record-breaking heat set to hit southern hemisphere as summer begins

The northern hemisphere experienced a sweltering summer due to climate and meteorological patters. Scientists say the south will not escape.

The southern hemisphere is facing a summer of extremes, say acientita, as climate change amplifies the effects of natural climate variablity. This cumes in the waker of a summer in the northern hemisphere that saw extreme heatwaves across Europe. China and North America, setting new records for both daytime and night-time temperatures in some areas.

Andrew King a climate scientist at the University of Melbourne, Australia, ways that there is "a high chance of seeing record-high temperatures, at least on a global average, and voing some particularly extreme eventa in some parts of the world".

El Niño effects

As 2023 draws to a close, meteorologists and climate scientists are predicting weather patterns that will lead to record-high land and sea anface temperatures. These include a strong El Ninn in the Pacific Ocean, and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole.

"Those kinds of big drivers can have a big influence on drought and extremes across the southern betmisphere," says Allie Gallant, a climate scientist at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and chief investigator for the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes. In Australia, both of those phenomena tund tonne significant disought conditions, particularly across the cast of the country.

Summer of 2023 in the northern hemisphere saw unprecedented high temperatures in China ports of Europe and North Africa, the worst bush fire season on roourd in Canada and severe marine heatwaves in the Mediterranean. The large land masses let the northern hemisphere create areas of circulating warm, dry ait known as heat domes. which block low-pressure systems that would otherwise bring cooler, wetter conditions.

On top of these converging phenomena, the Sun and atmospheric water vapour will influence the weather. Attitude determines

Near the end of the sermon on the Mount, Christ summed up a series of profound thoughts on human conduct by saying,

“Therefore all things, whatever you desire that men should do to you, do even so to them; for this is the Law and the Prophets”.

Mat 7:12

In this brief command, Christ taught us a couple of things about developing relationships with others and having a right attitude towards them. We need to decide how we want to be treated. Then we need to begin treating others in that manner.

1.Our attitude determines our approach to life

Eg. Story of two buckets half filled with water. One bucket, sees itself as half empty whereas the other bucket sees itself as half full.

Our attitude tells us what we expect from life. If our attitude is positive we are taking off: if it is negative, we may be headed for a crash.

If your attitude towards the world is excellent, you will receive excellent results. If you feel so-so about the world, your response from that world will be average. Feel badly about your world and you will seem to have only negative feedback from life.

2.Our attitude determines our relationships with people

Success = 90% people knowledge + 10% product knowledge

The most important formula of success is knowing how to get along with people. We must see people as important and place others first.

Challenge: Treat people you meet, every one of them without a single exception, as the most important person on earth. You will find that they will begin treating you the same way.

3.Often our attitude is the only difference between success and failure.

The former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir underlined this truth in one of her interviews. She said, “All my country has is spirit. We don’t have petroleum, dollars, we don’t have mines or great wealth in the ground and we don’t have the support of a world wide public opinion that looks favorably on us. All Israel has is their spirit., even the United States of America cannot save us.” This great lady was saying,

4.Our attitude at the beginning of a task will affect its outcome more than anything else.

“All’s well that ends well” An equal truth is “All’s well that begins well”. Most projects fail or succeed before they begin.

5.Our attitude can turn our problems into blessings.

What is the difference between an obstacle and an opportunity? Our attitude towards it. Life can be likened to a grindstone. Whether it grinds you down or polishes you depends upon what you are made of. Adversity is prosperity to those who possess a great attitude. Eg. Kites -> blast of wind against it lifts it higher. A kite would not fly unless it had the controlling tension of the string to tie it down.

6.Our attitude can give us an uncommonly positive perspective.

Eg. When Goliath came up against the Israelites, the soldiers thought He’s is too big we can never kill him. David looked at the same giant and thought ‘he’s so big I can’t miss him.’

There was once a Scotsman who was an extremely hard worker and expected all the men under him to be the same. His men would tease him, “Scotty, don’t you know that Rome wasn’t built in a day”? . “Yes” , he would answer, “I know that But I wasn’t foreman on that job” The individual whose attitude causes him to approach life from an entirely positive perspective is not always understood. He is what some would call a “no-limit” person. In other words, he doesn’t accept the normal limitations of life like most people. A truck driver was once asked how he kept from getting extremely tired in spite of the hundreds of miles he logged weekly. “Its all in your attitude, he replied. “Some drivers go to work in the morning but I go for a ride in the country’”. That kind of positive perspective gives him the edge on life.

7.Our attitude is not automatically good just because we are Christian: It is noteworthy that even the seven deadly sins (pride, covetousness, lust, envy, anger, gluttony and sloth) are all matters of attitude, inner spirit and motives. Sadly, many carnal Christians carry with them inner spirit problems. They are like the elder brother in the parable of the prodigal son, thinking they do everything right. He chose to stay home with his father. Yet, when the younger brother came back home, some of the elder brother’s wrong attitudes began to surface.

A disappearing island: 'The water is destroying us, one house at a time'

When 62-year-old fisherman Kpana Charlie has finished sorting through the day's catch and patching up the holes in his nets, he likes to settle into a weathered wooden chair on his front porch and let his mind drift back to his childhood. Back then, his home on Sierra Leone's Nyangai Island seemed like paradise.

He spent endless hours playing with his friends on the island's dazzling white beaches or splashing about in the warm, green sea. He liked to kick around a soccer ball on the sports field in his village, and in mango season, he would shimmy up the trees to collect their bountiful fruit. Whenever he wanted to avoid having to do his homework, he could simply disappear into the dense forest that covered much of the island.

Today, Nyangai is disappearing before his very eyes, swallowed up by the relentless sea. As recently as ten years ago, it still measured some 2,300 feet from end to end. What's left today is a patch of sand barely 300 feet long and 250 wide. The forests are gone, swamped by saltwater. The soccer field lies under water for 22 hours of the day. And the land on which Charlie's family home once stood, the home he was born in, has long since vanished beneath the waves. In as little as two years, Charlie fears, Nyangai may no longer exist at all.

"It's getting worse and worse," says Charlie, a father of six who has lived in a makeshift home of sticks and tarpaulin since his previous home was washed away. "There's nowhere to go to the toilet. There's nowhere to be free. Whenever the water's high the place floods all over. It never used to happen like this."

With nearly a third of its population living in coastal areas, and its heavy reliance on subsistence agriculture and fishing, Sierra Leone has been identified as one of the world's most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change, despite having contributed just a tiny fraction of global CO2 emissions. With a GDP per capita of barely $2,000, it is also one of the least prepared to deal with those impacts.

With global sea levels projected to rise by anywhere between 1 and 3 feet by the end of the century, along with an increase in extreme weather events, the experience of this West African island offers a glimpse into the possible fate of countless other low-lying areas around the world.

From shifting sands to torrential floods

From his office in the capital, Freetown, Gabriel Kpaka, the head of operations for the country's Meteorological Agency, says the reason for Nyangai's troubles is clear.

"We're seeing significant sea-level rise and these people don't have any proper defenses," he says. "All they have is sandbags. If we don't act now the impacts on people are just going to get worse."

Nyangai is one of a cluster of islands that make up the Turtle Islands archipelago. Low-lying and with loose, sandy soils, the islands have always been shaped by the sea. Their beaches shift slowly over time. Sand is eroded from one headland and deposited on the next. But the scale of the destruction of Nyangai, and the speed at which it's playing out, is like nothing the islanders have ever seen.

The island's chief, Mustafa Kong, estimates that 20 years ago there were more than 500 homes on Nyangai, with an average of 8 people living in each. Now there are barely 70. Most people have left for the safety of neighboring islands or the mainland, joining the estimated 20 million people worldwide displaced by climate change and extreme weather events on average each year.

There is little reliable data on sea level change in Sierra Leone. Until two years ago, the country did not even have a fully functional marine meteorological station that could measure it. But, a 2017 USAID climate vulnerability study found that parts of its coastline are already receding at a rate of 13-to-20 feet per year.

From their vantage point on Nyangai, most of the islanders say it's hard to gauge how much the sea level itself is rising. What's more apparent, they say, is that the storms have become more severe and more frequent, the rainfall more violent and less predictable, and the winds stronger, driving ever more destructive waves that batter and erode their shrinking island.

When Charlies was growing up, the thought had never even crossed his mind that the island on which his family had lived for three generations could be at serious risk from the sea. But, by 2012, he'd started to become worried. He remembers vividly the first time he truly began to believe the island might become uninhabitable. It was a Friday night in August 2012, and the islanders woke up to the sound of a howling gale and waves crashing into the walls of their homes. By midnight, panic had taken over, as families rushed to save their possessions and store them in the comparative safety of their boats. By the time the storm eventually abated, 35 houses had been washed away.

"It was chaos," says Charlie. "Everyone was so afraid. The next morning, we all decided to leave. I told myself I couldn't stay here any longer."

Many left the island soon after, but as calm gradually returned, Charlie changed his mind. He no longer felt safe on the island, but the prospect of setting up a new life elsewhere was no less daunting. Nyangai was his home. He liked that the island was free of snakes and, with no fresh water for mosquitoes to breed, virtually free of malaria. His family owned land there, and the surrounding waters provided his livelihood. Besides, moving would be hugely expensive.

"Now we're always prepared because we know we'll have to move," says Charlie. "We just don't know when."

A losing battle against the waves

On a Friday in late September, Charlie stands by the shore in the shade of one of the few trees still standing, watching as the high tide breached the top of the beach and began flowing down through people's homes on the other side. The islanders scramble to make what rudimentary defenses they can. One woman builds a ridge of sand around the base of her house to try to channel the water elsewhere. Another grabs a tattered sheet of tarpaulin and wedges it beneath her front door.

By 8 a.m., at least a dozen houses have been flooded, yet again, and a knee-deep pool of muddy water has accumulated in the center of the island. Children run out to play in it.

"The kids love it when it floods," complains one bystander. "They don't understand that that's what will destroy the island. The water is destroying us, one house at a time."

As the tide continues to rise, shopkeeper Tene Kamara races to pack up her inventory — soap, toothpaste, sandals and other basic goods imported from the mainland — and store them on tabletops above the reach of the water. Kamara spent 15 years building up her business on Nyangai after moving to the island from Freetown. She used to do a brisk trade, she says, but with the population shrinking by the month, she's finding it ever harder to turn a profit.

Some of the other islands of the Turtle Islands archipelago are also experiencing increasing rates of erosion but not on the scale seen on Nyangai. Some are ringed by protective mangrove forests whose tangle of roots and branches act as a barrier to the waves and help to trap sediment. Others rise higher above sea level or have denser, less sandy soil. All are now home to growing numbers of people displaced from Nyangai.

"I loved Nyangai so much," says Karim Anso, a 43-year-old former resident of the island who last year made the move to nearby Sei Island. "The fishing was good. We had good friends. But the water became a problem. The sea took everything."

Each time the water destroyed his house, Anso says, he would build another one farther inland. By the time his fourth home had been washed away, he decided he had no option but to leave with his wife and four children."I did it for my children," he said, sitting in a hammock outside his new home on Sei.

An island cut in two

For the roughly 400 people who remain, the constant erosion has prevented any kind of stability. At one point there were three separate villages on different parts of the island. By 2012, however, the land had been reduced to a thin strip, and the villages merged into a single settlement stretching along its length. Then, in 2015, the sea began to eat away the strip's middle, eventually separating the people on one end from those on the other. One island had become two.At low tide, children from one side would have to wade through water to get to school on the other. At high tide they'd have to take a boat. Friends and families were divided. Kpana Charlie was appointed as a new chief to run Mokontan, the name given to one of the two outposts, while Chief Kong ran the other one, known as Mobiaboi.

But no sooner had the islanders grown accustomed to this new state of affairs than Mobiaboi was overtaken by the waves. As recently as 2018 it had been a bustling village of more than a hundred homes, but by the end of 2022, the last family had packed up and left. Today all that remains of the place are the stumps of dead coconut palms embedded in a forlorn mound of sand that emerges at low tide. Nyangai is one island again, and the whole population is now crammed into what's left of Mokontan, with Mustafa Kong back in charge.

Kong has an unenviable role. He is responsible for the well-being of his people but is utterly powerless to arrest the advance of the water. At one stage he organized the planting of a small mangrove forest in an attempt to shore up one side of the island, but the seedlings didn't last long. Goats devoured most of them. Storms uprooted the rest. Kong has appealed to the government to build a levee around the island, but this has not happened.

"There's nothing else I can do for them," he said, sitting on a chair in front of a friend's home, where he's been living since his own house was destroyed by flooding two weeks earlier. "We used to have so much. Now everything's gone."

'Nyangai is not a government priority'

In the nearest large town, the former British trading post of Bonthe, where colonial ruins still dot the coast, the local government has responded to the sharp increase in flooding by constructing a concrete seawall along the length of the town. But in the many smaller coastal towns and villages in the area, there simply aren't the resources.

A USAID initiative attempted to help protect some of the area's most vulnerable settlements by planting mangroves, but this has had limited success. With insufficient funds for their upkeep, and with the population relying on mangrove wood for building and smoking fish, few trees outlived the project, which concluded in 2021. When the environmental news outlet Mongabay visited one of the project sites in 2022, it found that, out of 1,000 mangrove trees planted, barely 60 were still alive.

The national government, meanwhile, struggles to maintain key infrastructure and provide basic services even in the capital, let alone undertake costly engineering projects on a remote island now home to just a few hundred people.

"Nyangai is not a government priority at the moment," acknowledges Paul Lamin, the deputy director of the country's Environmental Protection Agency. "We have so many competing priorities in Sierra Leone and only scarce resources."

Lamin says the government has been implementing mangrove restoration projects in some communities, as well as raising awareness of the risks of deforestation, but that no other sea defenses are currently planned.

"Vulnerable countries should be getting some support [from wealthy nations] to strengthen their climate resilience," says Lamin. "But we're not really seeing that."

On Nyangai, Chief Kong's long-held dream had been to build himself a home of bricks or concrete, a home fit for a chief that would be a source of pride and prestige not only for him, personally, but for the island as a whole. But over the years, the dream has died. The typical Turtle Islands home has walls of intricately woven sticks overlaid with palm fronds or a mud coating, with a roof of dense thatch. But for his last two homes, Kong has simply used fabric from old sacks stretched over a frame of sticks, using rusting sheets of corrugated iron for a roof. Doing any more, he feels, would be a waste of time. Most of Nyangai's houses are now built in a similar fashion, giving the place the transitory feel of a refugee camp.

"My heart is broken," said Kong, who rarely leaves his house these days. "I just sit inside, thinking about it. It makes me so sad."

For those who remain on Nyangai, life is becoming increasingly tough. The island's well has been flooded with sea-water, forcing islanders to travel 45 minutes each way by boat to collect drinking water from neighboring islands during the long months of the dry season. There's no longer anywhere private for them to relieve themselves, so the islanders simply hide behind bushes on the shore, timing their toilet trips so that the beach can be washed clean by the incoming tide. Without space to play soccer or forests to play in, children mill around looking bored or devise games among the stumps of the uprooted trees that ring much of the island.

No one is certain what will happen next. Charlie's predicted two-year timeline for the island's future may be on the short side. Others hope that at least a part of it will hold out for several more years or perhaps even longer.

But the island's long-term prospects look bleak. Among the islanders still there, a sense of fatalism now prevails. They know they lack the means to stop the continuing destruction of their island. They also know there is scant prospect of receiving much help from outside. Instead, many say they have put their faith in a higher power.

"The sea is eating our island," said Chief Kong with resignation. "God will decide what happens to us. We're in his hands now."

“Ability is what you are capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.

Our success, fulfillment and happiness depends upon our ability to relate to people effectively.

Eg. Every aircraft has an altitude indicator by which the pilot determines the altitude of the plane and the position of the aircraft in relation to the horizon.

The plane is said to have a nose-high altitude. When the nose of the airplane is pointed above the horizon. The plane is said to have a nose- down altitude when the nose of the airplane is [pointed below the horizons and the aircraft is diving down.

The performance of the airplane depends on its altitude.

A person’s attitude affects his/her performance. Your attitude will determine your altitude (how high and how far you go in your life). Hardly a day passes without a word “attitude” entering a conversation. It may be used as a complaint or a compliment. What is attitude? -> Attitude is an inward feeling expressed by our behavior. That is why, an attitude can be seen without a word being said. It determines how we view and relate with our work and people around us.

“It is the advanced man’ of our true selves. Its roots are inward but fruits are outward. It is our best friend or our worst enemy. It is more honest and more consistent than our words.

It is your outward look based on past experiences

It is a thing which draws people to us or repels them.

It is never content until it is expressed.

It is the librarian of our past.

It is the speaker of our present.

It is the prophet of our future.

The key to having a good attitude is putting yourself in someone else’s place instead of putting them in their place.

Jesus maintained a perfect attitude in every situation. He prayed about everything and worried about nothing. We, too, should seek God’s guidance about every aspect of our lives and allow Him to work out His perfect will. Jesus’ attitude was never to become defensive or discouraged. His goal was to please the Father rather than to achieve His own agenda (John 6:38). In the midst of trials, He was patient. In the midst of suffering, He was hopeful. In the midst of blessing, He was humble. Even in the midst of ridicule, abuse, and hostility, He “made no threats . . . and did not retaliate. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly”

(1 Peter 2:23).

Sol Ramesh: By God’s grace I joined Psalms Troop. In the prayer for each other session everyone prayed for my gall bladder pain. Glory to God I have been delivered from pain. Thank you, Jesus.
Sol Dhanalakshmi: There were many problems and struggles in my agricultural land. Although I was born into a farming family, I did not know agriculture. But the Lord is using me. He has given me the strength to do the work of four people alone. He gave me the grace to see a rich harvest in the land before the eyes of others. God made these things happen. Praise be to the Lord!

Sol Usha: We were in a situation to go to court for a crime that we did not commit. The judge treated us very painfully. When we attended the worship class and prayed, the Lord immediately answered us and the judge spoke in our favor for the next four months. Praise be to God who did this miracle.
A sister named Lakshmi in Arakkonam was in a situation where she could not attend the worship class because of her husband. We prayed for her and when we worshipped all the bondages were unfolded. Now she is attending the worship regularly.

The healing team had a special Fasting Prayer on 15^th September 2023 around 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Where they made an appealed in the Heavenly court for the sick people. God has given some “Verdict”.

Cyclone Mocha: Deadly storm hits Myanmar and Bangladesh coasts

Cyclone Mocha did not make landfall at the sprawling refugee camp in Cox's Bazar as earlier feared, but still tore apart hundreds of makeshift shelters.

At least six people have been reported dead in Myanmar.

Up to 90 per cent of the western Rakhine state's capital city Sittwe has been destroyed, residents told the BBC.

The Burmese military has declared the whole of Rakhine as a natural disaster area.

By late Sunday, the storm had largely passed. Bangladesh's disaster official Kamrul Hasan said the cyclone caused "no major damage", but landslides and floods are still hitting the country. No casualties have been reported in Bangladesh so far.

Myanmar appears to have borne more direct impact, with the storm crashing through houses and cutting power lines in Rakhine state. Myanmar's meteorological department said it pounded through the country at about 209km/h (130 mph).

Camps for displaced Rohingya in the state have also been ripped apart.

Local media reported that a 14-year-old boy were among those reported dead - he was killed by a falling tree in the state.

Electricity and wireless connections were disrupted across much of Sittwe. Footage online showed roofs being blown off houses, telecom towers brought down, and billboards flying off buildings amid teeming rain across the region.

Authorities have declared Rakhine state a natural disaster area, while the Myanmar Red Cross Society said it was "preparing for a major emergency response".

Authorities in Bangladesh had evacuated 750,000 people ahead of the storm.

The streets of Cox's Bazar emptied as the cyclone intensified - the skies darkened, the winds picked up pace and the rains pounded down.

Hundreds of people crammed into a school which had been turned into a temporary cyclone shelter.

Mothers with babies, young children, the elderly and the frail packed into any available space in the classrooms, sleeping on desks and sitting under them.

As many arrived at the shelter in rickshaws and on foot, they brought their livestock - cattle, chickens, goats - as well as mats to sleep on.

They had come from fishing and coastal villages up to two hours away, making a difficult choice.

"I didn't want to leave my house," said Sumi Akter, who lives on a riverbank.

Sumi and others we met here say they have lived through other cyclones in recent years and are resigned to the regular pattern of leaving their homes to the mercy of nature.

Storm surges of up to four metres could swamp villages in low-lying areas. Sumi and others here are fearful their homes may be submerged.

"I wish the homes we lived in were built more strongly," she said.

Jannat, aged 17, whom we had met the day before in the same shelter, said she too was terrified of what might happen to her home on the riverbank.

Last year, another cyclone, Sitrang, destroyed her house, forcing her to spend what little money she had on repairing it.

"How can I live if this keeps happening? I can't afford to rebuild it - we are very poor," she said.

Nature was also punishing the poor in the world's largest refugee camp nearby.

Bangladesh's government does not allow Rohingya refugees to leave the camps, nor to build permanent structures.

As the cyclone hit, they hunkered down in flimsy bamboo shelters with tarpaulin roofs. Some were moved to community shelters within the camps, which offered little more protection.

Authorities told the BBC that more than 1,300 shelters were damaged by the wind, as were 16 mosques and learning centres. Trees had fallen in the camps, while two landslides also caused some damage.

The tarpaulin that covered Mohammed Ayub's shelter was torn off by the winds. Now he and his family of eight are living in the open, in wet and miserable weather.

Having spent the days before terrified of what Cyclone Mocha could bring, Mohammed was relieved the camps didn't take a direct hit from the storm.

Mizanur Rahman, from the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner, said that as far as he was aware, there were no casualties in the camps as a result of the cyclone.

Forecasters warned Cyclone Mocha could be the most powerful storm seen in Bangladesh in nearly two decades.

The Bangladeshi meteorological department office said the maximum sustained wind speed within 75km (45 miles) of the centre of the cyclone was about 195km/h (120mph), with gusts and squalls of 215km/h.

In preparation for the storm's arrival, nearby airports had been shut, fishermen were ordered to suspend their work and 1,500 shelters set up as people from vulnerable areas were moved to safer spots.

In 2008, Cyclone Nargis tore through the southern coastal regions of Myanmar, killing almost 140,000 people and severely affecting millions. Most of those who died were killed by a 3.5 metre wall of water that hit the low-lying Irrawaddy Delta.

What does the Bible say about attitude?

Writing from a prison cell in Rome, the apostle Paul wrote about the attitude a Christian should have: “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ” (Phi 1:27). The "whatever happens" here is a reference to whether Paul can come to visit the Philippians or not. Paul gave this instruction so that "whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel" (Phi 1:27). No matter what unexpected disruptions, frustrations, or difficulties come our way, we are to respond with a Christ like attitude. We should be standing firm and striving for the faith. Paul later writes, “Your attitude should be the same as that of Jesus Christ” (Phi 2:5). He is talking about demonstrating humility and selflessness in relationships. He also encourages us in Eph 5:1 to be “imitators of Christ as dearly beloved children.” As children love to imitate what they see and repeat what they hear; we also are charged to imitate and model Christ’s behavior and to be clear reflections of the Lord (Mat 5:16).

When Paul writes that our “attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus,” he had summarized in the previous two verses what such an attitude is: selflessness, humility, and service. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Phi 2:3-4). In other words, the attitude a Christian should reflect is one that focuses on the needs and interests of others. Without question, that does not come naturally to us. When Christ came into the world, He established a whole new attitude to relationships with others. One day when His disciples were arguing among themselves regarding who was to be greatest in His kingdom, Jesus said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mat 20:25-28). Jesus is teaching us that, when we become preoccupied with our own things, it can cause conflicts and other problems with people we know. Instead, God wants us to have an attitude of serious, caring involvement in the concerns of others.

Paul speaks more about this Christ like attitude in his letter to the church in Ephesus: “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:22-24). Many religions of today, including the New Age philosophies, promote the old lie that we are divine or that we can become gods. But the truth of the matter is that we will never become God, or even a god. Satan’s oldest lie was promising Adam and Eve that, if they followed his advice, “you shall be as gods” (Genesis 3:5).

Each time we try to control our circumstances, our future, and the people around us, we’re only demonstrating that we want to be a god. But we must understand that, as creatures, we will never be the Creator. God doesn’t want us to try to become gods. Instead, He wants us to become like Him, taking on His values, His attitudes, and His character. We are meant to “be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Eph 4:23-24).

Finally, we must always keep in mind that God’s ultimate goal for His children is not our comfort, but the transformation of our minds into the attitude of godliness. He wants us to grow spiritually, to become like Christ. This doesn’t mean losing our personalities or becoming mindless clones. Christlikeness is all about transforming our minds. Again, Paul tells us, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Rom 12:2).

It is God’s will that we develop the kind of mindset described in the Beatitudes of Jesus (Mat 5:1-12), that we exhibit the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23), that we emulate the principles in Paul’s great chapter on love (1 Cor 13), and that we strive to pattern our lives after Peter’s characteristics of an effective and productive life (2 Pet 1:5-8).

Vision received on 17/08/2023

The earth was in a Dragon's mouth.
The vision was given for the South Zone in Tamil Nadu. Where I saw a tree which has started fruiting. A word was given “DON’T BE LAZY.”
For the East zone, I saw a pillar which is surrounded by a belt, and a dove was sitting on it. God gave a word “YOU WILL GROW.”
A furious fire over the earth and saw an animal.
Showed a vision, where it said “Harvest is more”.
Got a vision of a man being bonded.
I saw an eagle and God anointing us.

A sister who attended the graduation met with a major accident while returning home with her family. The whole family was worshiping God while traveling and this was the reason why they were saved from the accident. From this incident, they knew about the power of worshiping the Lord. Thanks be to God.
A 13-year-old boy from a Hindu family was suffering from insomnia for nearly 40 days. After attending the worship class, God performed a miracle, and when we checked him through Dr. Albert. God released him and he got a normal sleep
