Christians Face Lengthy Prison Sentences in Iran

Three Iranian Christians have been sentenced to prison as the country increases its crackdown on Christianity.

Mission Network News reports that two of the three men sentenced to prison are Muslim converts to Christianity.

The three men were sentenced to at least a decade in prison each on charges of blasphemy, “organizing and creating house churches,” and “acting against national security.”

In addition to these three arrests, Shamiram Isavi Khabizeh, the wife of Pastor Victor Tamraz, one of the men who was sentenced, was arrested and charged with “participating in foreign seminars” and “acting against Iranian national security.” She was later released.

Christians terrorised by Hindu villagers in Telangana

A mob of Hindu villagers led by the head of the village disrupted a gathering of Christians, who were gathered in a private home to worship on 2 July 2017 in the southern Indian state of Telangana.

The mob burnt a Bible, Christian literature, musical instruments and holy sacraments and forcefully applied ‘Bottu’ (a religious mark) on the forehead of the Christian women present.

Attacks on Christians surge in the first 100 days of new rule in Uttar Pradesh

Spikng crime rates, vigilantism, sectarian clashes, moral policing and a growing sense of insecurity felt by the minorities marked the completion of 100 days in office for Yogi Adityanath, the ‘firebrand Hindu cleric’ who is the new Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state of India.

Adityanath claims that he is ‘satisfied’ with the work he has done in the first 100 days of his government but the opposition and minorities are not buying it.

Playing to his Hindu hardliner image, he also issued orders to crack down on illegal slaughterhouses and meat shops and put a ban on cow smuggling which has since then become an excuse for attacks on Muslims and Dalits in the state. In addition to it all, anti-Romeo squads were set up in the state to prevent eve-teasing (harassment of women and girls) which resulted in much controversy.

At least two Christian delegations, one from the Roman Catholic Church and the other from the Protestant groups, paid a ‘courtesy visit’ to the newly elected Chief Minister and he reportedly assured them that “no one will be allowed to take law in their own hands and that the community need not fear in the practice of their faith.”

Goa: Over 100 holy crosses and graves in Christian cemetery vandalised

Representative PhotoGoa has witnessed a spate of attacks on religious symbols since the beginning of this month.

Over 100 crosses and plaques at the Guardian Angel Catholic cemetery in south Goa’s Curchorem village, around 45 kilometres from Panaji, were desecrated in the wee hours of Monday.

Inspector general of police Rupinder Kumar said they were looking into the matter and investigating all possibilities in the case. Police also said miscreants damaged the CCTV camera installed at the gate of the cemetery before desecrating the crosses and plaques, leaving no video evidence of the incident.

This is the fourth incident in a month reported from south Goa where religious artefacts or idols have been desecrated.

Reacting to the attacks, chief minister Manohar Parrikar had said specific attempts were being made to create tension in Goa.

“Such acts will not be tolerated. The culprits will be punished once they are caught,” he had said.

Goa police have formed a special team to crack the cases.
