It's no secret that Israel – the “start-up nation” – is a global centre for technology. Culture Trip explores the country’s homegrown developments that are making an impact on a global scale.

In the world of technology and innovation, Israel is king. The country has more hi-tech start-ups per capita than anywhere else in the world and is second only to the US in venture capital funds. This is an impressive feat for any state, but more so for one that is only 70 years old and home to just under 9m people.

Despite its relatively short lifespan, the “start-up nation2 is responsible for hundreds of tech inventions, from everyday items like USB drives to futuristic medical devices that can offer diagnoses in an instant.

Israel is currently at the forefront of college degrees. And what sets Israel apart from other countries is its universities.

Over the past few decades, Israel has established itself as one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. With a population of just over 6 million, there are an incredible number of more than 4,000 technology companies in this country.

Cisco, PayPal, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Apple, and Intel are just some of the companies that are working on new products in Israel. But how did this poison in the Middle East sidestep the war and bring about a technological revolution in the world? How did they get the technology world into their own hands? Let’s get to know that.

Science and technology in Israel are one of the country’s most developed sectors. Israel spent 4.3% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on civil research and development in 2015, the highest ratio in the world. In 2019, Israel was ranked the world’s fifth most innovative country by the Bloomberg Innovation Index. It ranks thirteenth in the world for scientific output as measured by the number of scientific publications per million citizens. In 2014, Israel’s share of scientific articles published worldwide (0.9%) was much higher than its share of the global population (0.1%).

There is no doubt that Israel is the most controversial state in the world. Conflicts, whether religious or political, are inevitable when it comes to Israel. This country has made remarkable strides in science and technology.

Israel is home to major companies in the high-tech industry and has one of the world’s most technologically literate populations. As mentioned earlier, there are more than 4,000 tech companies in Israel, including some of the world’s largest companies. Israel has 60 of the world’s top 500 tech giants with research centres and new technology centres in Israel! Tel Aviv, the capital of Israel, is one of the largest technology centres in the world, right next to Silicon Valley in the United States in terms of tech startups. Israel is even number 3 on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, which is made up of shares of US-based tech companies, with only the United States and China topping the list. Israel is also behind the list of combined technology companies of Germany, Spain, Italy and France!

Right now, most of the hardware for the next model of iPhone is being made in Israel. China may be ahead in terms of production, but Israel is at the forefront in terms of researching new technologies, inventing them and making them a reality. These Israelis have created many of Google’s new technologies. Intel, the world’s largest processor maker, is also in need of Israeli researchers to study microchips. The Intel factory in Israel employs more than 11,000 people, making it one of the largest technology factories in the country. Bill Gates’ Microsoft is also considered a semi-Israeli company, meaning that Israeli technicians have also contributed to the development of Windows software running on your computer.

The most surprising thing is that a large part of Israel’s income comes from this technology sector. The money earned from the research and development sector of big companies including IBM, PayPal, Cisco, Amazon, Facebook and the import of technology is 12.5% of Israel’s GDP!

We should remember that all this was promised to them by God because they were a chosen race.

‘Over 22 million in Ethiopia facing severe food crisis’

Over 22 million people are facing severe food shortages in Ethiopia due to back-to-back droughts caused by five failed rainy seasons, according to non-profit Save the Children.

More than half of these 22.6 million are reeling from climate-induced shocks with conflict, inflation and forced displacement, causing further misery and children facing increased risk of death from malnutrition, it further said.

The Tigray region of Ethiopia continues to experience one of the worst food security emergencies globally. Food consumption deficits are expected to be the most severe in the southern, southeastern and northern parts of the country located in the Horn of Africa, it added.

Emergency (IPC Phase 4) and Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes are likely in northern, central, southern and southeastern Ethiopia through at least May 2023, even with ongoing assistance, according to Famine Early Warning Systems Network by the United States Agency for International Development.

Almost four million children in Ethiopia are severely malnourished, accounting for around half of those suffering from malnutrition across the Horn of Africa.

Millions are unable to generate income and access food due to the drought, which is likely to lead to widespread and severe levels of food shortage through at least mid-2023, the non-profit said.

Southern and southeastern Ethiopia are of extreme concern, as a record-breaking drought is forecast to continue in this area through at least mid-2023.

Some of the most severe drought conditions are observed in the Borena zone in the Oromia region and in Dawa, Liban, Afder and parts of Shabelle zones in the Somali region.

In these areas, Emergency (IPC Phase 4) outcomes are expected across the projection period, signifying that worse outcomes would be likely in the absence of current and anticipated humanitarian food assistance.

Since 2021, 4.5 million livestock have died, according to the regional government's estimates. Livestock deaths have dried up milk, the main source of nutrition for children.

The non-profit appealed to donors for more funds to expand operations and reach the most vulnerable children and their families and support longer-term resilience programming against multiple and frequent humanitarian shocks in the future.
